How about spending a month studying the game instead of playing.

I'd also say that game selection is critial. If you're not at a table with 2 or 3 poor players, it's going to be tuff to beat the rake unless you're quite a solid player.

I study the game constantly. I think about hands. I need help with game selection, should I just observe the tables before I sit down or what?

What limit(s) are you playing for $50 at a time? Just out of curiousity.

I have a friend who does this. He plays mostly short-handed and will start out at 1/2 or 2/4, switching to 3/6 or even 5/10 if he runs well. He has cashed out with $300+ a few times. It is crazy to me, but for a player with discipline/tilt issues it is tough to argue with this method. It limits his losses and gives him the opportunity to let his winnings run.

I have tried to talk sense into him, but...

I tried this about 12 months ago online as a bet with a statsfiend buddy of mine. I started with $50 at .25/.50. Every time I got enough for 100BB at the next level, I moved up. Every time I had less than 50BB at the current level I moved down.

He claimed that as long as I kept moving up, my risk-of-ruin would never get to a safe point; eventually I'd suffer a bad session and lose my entire bank roll.

After 2 months and 4 or 5 trips up several levels and then back down, I'd learned a lot more about bankroll management and RoR and my buddy had earned $50.
