My first NL hand ever, please rate
Hello,
This is my first NL hand ever! I got dealt AKs, I will never forget that How do you rate my play? Why was it bad/good? I think my pre-flop raise was a standard play. Did I have to fold to his re-raise (which put me all-in)? Why (not)? Re: My first NL hand ever, please rate
Yes, you had to call.
But please, please buy in for the maximum not the minimum. Then you might have learned something about playing after the flop. |

Re: My first NL hand ever, please rate
yeah read the FAQs
You have a lot more to learn. Especially the idea of playing with full stacks. Being as short stacked as you are, this is a no brainer allin. |

Re: My first NL hand ever, please rate
I will read the FAQs, yes. As this was my first game ever, I bought in for the minumum. Why is this a no brainer allin?
thanks all |

Re: My first NL hand ever, please rate
It is a no brainer because nobody will credit a shortstack with having a hand that good.

Re: My first NL hand ever, please rate
The call is a no brainer because you're getting 18-15 odds from the pot, and your chances of winning the pot are better than that:
You're crushing a worse ace You're a favourite against two lower cards You're a slight underdog to a pair lower than kings You have outs against KK Even against AA, you could make a flush I haven't filled in the precise odds in each case, but you get the picture. Then if you consider the range of hands that your opponent might make this reraise with, it becomes obvious that your chances of winning justify the call. These kind of preflop decisions are something you'll get used to in NL, especially if you play tourneys. Btw, notice that you could have made a LOT more money out of this hand if you'd bought in for the max. Sure, you'll make mistakes at first but if you're worried about losing the money, start at a lower limit. Losing your whole stack in one hand is just part of NL... |

Re: My first NL hand ever, please rate
I'll rate it:
+5 points for perfect preflop play +5 points for being good at hitting flops -10 points for sitting shortstacked Overall, you get 0 points. OK, if the sarcasm isn't transpartent I'll translate. The one mistake in the hand is sitting short, other than that it was textbook. Nice hand. |

Re: My first NL hand ever, please rate
Everyone here hates short stacks. However, there's nothing wrong with short stacks if you are using a reasonable short stack strategy. one short stack post (do a search for more)
Short stacks are don't take full advantage if you are better at postflop play than your opposition. Conversely, short stacks reduce your disadvantage if you are not as good post flop and most of the action is preflop or flop. Advantages: simplified decisions, straightforward strategies (if you take some time to learn them - clearly you haven't given you have any question about this hand), others at the table play to the other large stacks and therefore may not play you optimally. Disadvantages: stunts your learning, pain in the ass for those of us playing with full stacks |

Re: My first NL hand ever, please rate
I agree with Jouster, OP is just starting out in NL, there is nothing wrong with being in short to get a feel for the game and learn while keeping decisions simple.
*However*, I still think you bought in way too short, something like $5 is ok. |
