I starting to play more O8 tournaments and I am working on a new (to me at least) strategy. Comments more than welcome on this.
I have come to the conclusion that there are mostly two kinds of people in these tournaments.. people just looking for the low/wheels and getting quartered or worse half the time, and people who don't seem to know how to play O8 at all (JJJ3,etc). This started me thinking about a strategy for tournaments (and feel free to tell me I am insane)... Play the quality plo hands early on in the tournament, and play much more of these hands than I would normally do in cash games. Not saying to fold AA23ds or anything like that, its just that everyone seems to play A2xx,A3xx,23XX to the river even with 2 big cards on the flop. Getting quartered or worse in a tourney seems to be much worse than in cash games, because there is no going into your pockets again. This seems to work fairly well so far because either I .. 1) miss the flop and don't chase a low 2) hit the hand and scoop it because there is no low 3) get the high half and let the others get quartered with the nut low. BTW - These are all mid-low buyins so far while I get my feet wet ($30/$20 tourneys, $10/20 sngs). |
