Hollinger NBA Player Projections
These are the Top 15(not sure if I should past everything since this is ESPN Insider) players for the upcoming season based on Hollinger's Projected PER. Not surprisingly Lebron blows everyone away with a PPER of 31.86 and no one else over 27.
1. LeBron James, CLE 2005-06 season: James was younger than several players who entered the 2006 draft, but despite his youth he was arguably the best player in the league in 2005-06. He became the youngest player to... 2006-07 Projected PER 31.86 League Avg: +16.86 2005-06 PER: 28.17 2. Kobe Bryant, LAL 2005-06 season: I don't think Kobe Bryant was the best player in the league over the 82-game season. But when he was at his best, nobody could touch him. Say what you want about LeBron James and... 2006-07 Projected PER 27.00 League Avg: +12.00 2005-06 PER: 28.11 3. Dirk Nowitzki, DAL 2005-06 season: It was a banner season for Nowitzki, who sported the league's best PER and led the Mavs to their first-ever conference championship. He set career highs in field-goal percentage,... 2006-07 Projected PER 26.86 League Avg: +11.86 2005-06 PER: 28.20 4. Amare Stoudemire, PHO 2005-06 season: It was a wasted season for Amare Stoudemire, who had microfracture knee surgery just before training camp and made only a brief, aborted comeback before calling it a year. His offseason... 2006-07 Projected PER 26.12 League Avg: +11.12 2005-06 PER: 17.83 5. Dwyane Wade, MIA 2005-06 season: So ... anyone still think it's Shaq's team? Wade was mysteriously ignored in the MVP voting, based on the flimsy logic that since Shaquille O'Neal was the Heat's best player... 2006-07 Projected PER 25.91 League Avg: +10.91 2005-06 PER: 27.68 6. Kevin Garnett, MIN 2005-06 season: It's not his fault. I feel like I need to say this every time Garnett's name comes up, because he's immediately assailed for not doing enough to lift his pathetic teammates to victory.... 2006-07 Projected PER 24.97 League Avg: +9.97 2005-06 PER: 26.88 7. Chris Paul, NOK 2005-06 season: Paul had a great rookie year, but I'm not sure people realize just how great it was. Let me crib from something I wrote previously: Paul had the best... 2006-07 Projected PER 24.96 League Avg: +9.96 2005-06 PER: 22.14 8. Pau Gasol, MEM 2005-06 season: Gasol opened the new campaign with a shaggy, patchy beard, sending countless reporters scurrying to the Internet to find the Spanish word for "wookie." It seemed to work for him... 2006-07 Projected PER 23.95 League Avg: +8.95 2005-06 PER: 22.76 9. Gilbert Arenas, WAS 2005-06 season: Arenas continued his development into one of the game's biggest stars, finishing fourth in the league in scoring and ranking second among point guards in PER. As with many of today's... 2006-07 Projected PER 23.78 League Avg: +8.78 2005-06 PER: 23.87 10. Allen Iverson, PHI 2005-06 season: Somebody forgot to tell this guy that short, fast guards are supposed to decline rapidly in their 30s. Iverson celebrated the big 3-oh by putting together the best season of his... 2006-07 Projected PER 23.31 League Avg: +8.31 2005-06 PER: 26.02 11. Shaquille O'Neal, MIA 2005-06 season: Shaq came to Miami with the idea of leading the Heat to the championship, and seemed a little taken aback that he was essentially an innocent bystander while Dwyane Wade rode to... 2006-07 Projected PER 23.29 League Avg: +8.29 2005-06 PER: 24.47 12. Tracy McGrady, HOU 2005-06 season: McGrady has battled back trouble his entire career, but last year was the first time he missed significant action because of it. McGrady lost 15 games early in the season with back... 2006-07 Projected PER 23.18 League Avg: +8.18 2005-06 PER: 22.02 13. Elton Brand, LAC 2005-06 season: Long one of the league's most unheralded stars, Brand came out of the shadows with a broad-based improvement that was the driving force behind the best Clippers season in memory.... 2006-07 Projected PER 22.72 League Avg: +7.72 2005-06 PER: 26.67 14. Andrei Kirilenko, UTA 2005-06 season: By Kirilenko's recent standards, it was an off year. His scoring rate dipped, he made too many turnovers, and his insane rate of blocks and steals also dropped slightly from the... 2006-07 Projected PER 22.57 League Avg: +7.57 2005-06 PER: 20.71 15. Shawn Marion, PHO 2005-06 season: Marion led the Suns in points, blocks, rebounds, steals and minutes, and narrowly missed leading in field-goal percentage. He was by acclimation the team's best defender, on a club... 2006-07 Projected PER 22.35 League Avg: +7.35 2005-06 PER: 23.66 |

Re: Hollinger NBA Player Projections
kobe at #2 is a joke. KG and LBJ are a cut above everyone else right now IMO.
hollinger is by far the best basketball writer in the world right now, but his man-crush on chris paul is getting a little out of hand. |

Re: Hollinger NBA Player Projections
Stat nerds...is PER the best rating for basketball players??
Seriously, any rating system that has Al Jefferson at number 32, and Dwight Howard at 53, needs to be revamped a lot. |

After reading the first part of this post, I had to look up, because I forgot, who won the MVP last year - Lebron or Kobe.
