Help me find some good Jazz
I have always enjoyed Jazz, never went out of my way to listen to it, but when if it was playing in a restaurant or at someones house I really enjoyed it.
So finally this year I bought some Miles Davis and [censored] loved it! I chose him as my first purchase because how universally agreed on he is as a great in the genre. But now I would like to expand, but do not know of any others, contemporary or classic that I should purchase. I have thought about John Coltrane, and probably will buy a couple of his albums, but who else is out there? Any opinions are appreciated. k, thx. |

Re: Help me find some good Jazz
I'm no jazz expert by any means, but two indispensable albums are:
--Coltrane - My Favorite Things --Dave Brubeck - Time Out Both are landmark jazz albums. |

I don't know how well-known this guy is, but my dad got me into Bill Frisell a couple of years ago and I really like him. He's still around and playing too, I got a chance to see him play at my college last year and it was great.

Re: Help me find some good Jazz
Miles and Coltrane's most famous works are generally considered to be in the "bebop" sub-genre...here are some more artists thought to be "bebop" that no jazz fan should miss out on:
Charlie Parker Charles Mingus Thelonius Monk Cannoball Adderely Dizzie Gallespie These guys often worked together; for example, Coltrane was part of "Miles's band" for a while, and Cannonball and Coltrane put out a lot of great stuff together. My personal favorites are Coltrane and Mingus. For something not usually considered bebop, but still excellent, pick up some Louie Armstrong, Billy Holliday and Count Basie. I don't know much about contemporary jazz; somebody else will have to help you out on that. |

Re: Help me find some good Jazz
Two of my favorite albums are:
Charles Mingus - "Mingus Ah Um" Stan Getz and Joao Gilberto - "Getz/Gilberto" (the one with Girl From Ipanema) Miles and Coltrane are the only other artists I'm really familiar with, and both of their entire catalogs are great. |

Giant Steps is another good album to start with for Coltrane.
Mingus Ah Uhm is a great choice. |

Re: Help me find some good Jazz
Thanks for the suggestions all!
Someone said Favorite things by Coltrane is great, what would you say should be picked up after that? By Coltrane that is. |

Re: Help me find some good Jazz
This is excellent, and recommended by me.
It is a live recording of Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane recorded at Carnegie Hall that was recently discovered in a box at the Library of Congress. |
