Default Cricket Help

Having the addictive personality I do, I bet on India to England in cricket yesterday ($22 to win $11). Can someone translate the basic scoring for me? Here is an article describing the game:

Munaf Patel bowled superbly, but India almost snatched defeat from the jaws of victory in their opening encounter of the Champions Trophy against England at the Sawai Mansingh stadium in Jaipur on October 15.

While chasing a victory target of 126 runs, India lost six wickets but in the end beat England by four wickets.

The Indians were back to their number one opening pair of Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Shewag but the two could only build a partnership of 18 runs as Sehwag (9) chased a wide delivery from Stephen Harmison and edged it to first slip for Andrew Strauss to take the catch.

Irfan Pathan , coming in at number three, hit four fours in his knock of 19 runs, before he was caught in the covers by Kevin Pietersen off James Anderson .

Two balls later, Anderson had the Indian skipper Rahul Dravid (4) caught at first slip by Strauss to reduce India to 72/3.

All this while, Sachin was grafting his way to a big knock. Sachin, who today became the world's most capped one-day international player, top scored for India with a knock of 35 runs that came off 41 balls and contained five fours.

Sachin’s innings was cut short by a low delivery from Harmison that trapped him plumb in front of the wicket.

Sudden rush of blood again cost Mahendra Dhoni his wicket. He looked to end the match with a big shot, but faltered and ended his innings after scoring seven runs having been caught at mid-on by Paul Collingwood off James Dalrymple.

Dalrymple, the off-spinner, then almost hit the panic button for India in the same over, when Suresh Raina (0) edged his delivery onto his stumps.

But Yuvraj Singh , played a patient knock hitting four fours in his knock of 27 as Harbhajan Singh (6) hit the winning runs for India halfway into the 30th over.

Earlier, England skipper Andrew Flintoff won the toss and elected to bat first on a pitch that looked flat and full of runs.

Munaf struck first blood for India in the fourth over of the match by trapping Ian Bell (4) plumb in front of the wicket. Aussie umpire Darrell Harper adjudged Bell out even though the ball was going over the stumps.

In the next over, Pathan dismissed Flintoff for a duck and in the eighth over Munaf dismissed newcomer Michael Yardy in the same fashion to reduce England to 17/3.

Pathan then had Strauss (10) caught at second slip by Dravid and in the nineteenth over Munaf had the dangerous Pietersen (27) caught at first slip by Sachin to further pin down England at 55/5.

Collingwood, with a knock of 38, tried his best to fight back but his innings was cut short by Ramesh Powar who had him caught behind by Dhoni.

Harbhajan had English keeper Chris Read (2) caught at long on by Pathan and then himself took a brilliant catch at long on to dismiss Sajid Mahmood (8) off Powar.

Powar then dismissed Dalrymple (24) and ran out Harmison (2) as England were bundled out for 125 runs in 37 overs.

Munaf was adjudged the Man of the Match as England never recovered from his burst early on registered their lowest total ever against India.

England scored 125. India's target to win was therefore 126. They got to 126 with 6 wickets down and 4 wickets left and the game ended b/c India had won.

A wicket is like an out. An innings is when your team loses 10 wickets. A one-day match is like a baseball game where you only play one inning but you get 10 outs (wickets) in that inning, and you also get only a limited number of balls thrown to you by the bowler (pitcher).

England batted first and scored 125 runs in total. India had a target of 126 to win. At one point though India had had a number of players (6) out and it looked like they might not reach the target.

All this while, Sachin was grafting his way to a big knock. Sachin, who today became the world's most capped one-day international player, top scored for India with a knock of 35 runs that came off 41 balls and contained five fours.

[/ QUOTE ]

Sachin Tendulkar however, was not out yet, was the top scored for india and scored 35 runs after 41 bowls of the ball. He also hit the ball really far.

[ QUOTE ]
Sachin’s innings was cut short by a low delivery from Harmison that trapped him plumb in front of the wicket.

[/ QUOTE ]

Sachin was eventually out because he blocked the ball from hitting the stumps with his legs (you're only allowed to do that with your bat). (this is called Leg Before Wicket)

[ QUOTE ]
Sudden rush of blood again cost Mahendra Dhoni his wicket. He looked to end the match with a big shot, but faltered and ended his innings after scoring seven runs having been caught at mid-on by Paul Collingwood off James Dalrymple.

[/ QUOTE ]

Mahendra Dhoni scored 7 runs. He wanted to be the one to score the winning run, but mucked it up and was caught out by Paul Collingwood

[/ QUOTE ]

Then Flintoff was out after not scoring any runs. Michael Yardy also failed to score any and was also out. At this point england had scored 17 runs, but had 3 batsmen out.

[/ QUOTE ]

Dalrymple scored 24 runs before being out, and Harmison scored 2. England were all out after scoring 125 runs in about 222 balls.

Cricket is like baseball, but backwards.

Instead of man after man getting out until someone hits the ball, in cricket man after man hits the ball until someone gets out.

You have two sides one out in the field and one in .
Each man that's in the side that's in goes out and when he's out he comes in and the next man goes in until he's out .

When they are all out the side that's out comes in and the side that's been in goes out and tries to get those coming in out .

Sometimes you get men still in and not out .

When both sides have been in and out including the not outs , the game is over.

Unless time runs out before it happens (usually 4 or 5 days for a test match).
