Bands You Saw Before They Were Discovered

The only band I saw before they 'made it' was Night Ranger in around 1980. My older brother was/is a guitar player and wanted to go see Ronnie Montrose in the band 'Montrose.' I remember it was a nice size club in Los Angeles, and Night Ranger was the opening act. They (Night Ranger) were a very tight band at that point. Anybody would have sensed a strong chemistry among the band members, especially the two guitar players who did a bunch of double leads during their songs. Of the two bands I saw that day, I'm only really able to remember Night Ranger.

I don't think I've ever seen a band before they made it. but my brother saw the dropkick murphys played at the auditorium area of my church for a bunch of high school kids.

the best i can do is i met Reliant K (who made a small splash) in the audience in a club in Cleveland, hung out with them, then went to another club to see some other band. a year later they've signed to a label, etc, and when they come to town they ignore us completely b/c they're so full of themselves.

oh well.

Godsmack definitely qualifies. Porcupine Tree does if 'making it' means FM radio play and getting a song in the flick Four Brothers. Frogg Cafe qualifies if making it is getting internet radio play and occasional play on obscure (brilliant) XM music channels like Music Lab.

My cousin in NY who about 10 years older than me saw the Beasties when they were a punk band and were like 15 years old. Someone in the audience took a guitar from out of their hands and everyone was heckling them.
