Default internet connection keeps getting errors and disconnecting frequently

seriously, every so often i get an eff-load of errors everytime i connect to the internet and end up disconnecting 2 minutes later. on good days, it disconnects every hour or so.

i am on adsl broadband though an Alcatel router. my provider, BT has upgraded my speed and this might be the cause of my problem - the faster my net connection, the more errors i normally get. when i connect to the net a little pop up box explains how fast my connection is, ranging from 1.6 megs to 3.4.

any help, 2p2?

1. Use an ethernet connection to your modem instead of USB.

2. Run the highest quality cabling you can to the modem.

#2 may make no difference whatsoever if the wiring farther upstream is crappy.

Glad to hear that. I assumed you were using USB since it showed the link at 3mbit, not 10 that would typically be shown via an ethernet connection. Always opt for Ethernet over USB to the modem if you have the choice (for anyone searching this problem later).

I guess that leaves #2...wiring.

I had speed issues with a commersial SDSL account and they were able to check line noise on site. Not sure if a residential provider would go to these extremes.

My $0.02 on the bottom line: it sounds lie line noise/dirty connection. The only thing you have control over is the wiring in your home. If the problem is between home and the DSLAM or beyond, then sadly you're just SOL...unless you're like one of my insane friends and decide to destroy the offending telco equipment up the street, forcing them to replace it and hopefully get it right that time.

having more errors when upgrading speed does make sense as well. Back to my SDSL example, I wanted a 1.544 link and it *would* link up, but with more errors and less throughput...so we dropped it to 1.1 and it never lost connection for the next 2 yrs until I replaced it w/ a T1.

You may wish to bump down the speed if on-site wiring doesn't make any improvement. Not what you wanted to hear, I'm sure, but that's how I see the situation unless someone else chimes in w/ better info. GL!
