Default family car?

My wife and I have a 4 year old boy and are expecting twins in January. We both hate the idea of a mini-van but have been told by EVERYONE that its absolutely required. We've been told life will be miserable with 3 kids without a minivan.

Suggestions for any alternatives, or if not, what's the best minivan to get?

We live outside Boston, wife will have the "new" car, and she doesn't really drive that far anywhere.

Mini-van is the sensible option for most people. Your other option is a Suburban/Yukon or Expedition/Excursion. These vehicles have 3rd row seating, and will run $10-20k more than the mini-van, along with much worse gas mileage.

Your other option is a new crossover vehicle. Basically its a mini-van thats made to look like a SUV. Most manufacturers have these vehicles now and are a good alternative for the image concience. I am more familiar with the american versions the Chrysler Pacifica and the Ford Freestyle and they are excelent vehicles.

Good info for your decision:

No one makes a station wagon that seats more than 6 anymore, so that isn't an option.

If you decide on a Ford, you can PM me and I can hook you up with an honest dealer in the Metro West.
