College Kids
i'm doing a research paper on college poker players. i'm trying to gather data from actual players, and from ppl outside the community like here on 2+2.
here are my questions if you'd like to help...(please!) -who do you think plays more: frat boys or geeky students? -what kind of young women play? are there specific characteristics to their personality? -what kind of bankroll do you believe college students have to start playing online? appreciate the help. thanks. |

Re: College Kids
I've been out of college a long time but deal with the kids here everyday and will try to answer.
[ QUOTE ] -who do you think plays more: frat boys or geeky students? [/ QUOTE ] Frat boys will predominate in live games on campus and off because popular kids only like to associate with same and also don't want geeks taking their money when they play drunk and stupid. For that reason, geeks will predominate online. [ QUOTE ] -what kind of young women play? are there specific characteristics to their personality? [/ QUOTE ] Traits of young women who play: -desire to associate with those who have $$ and possibly smarts to have a good gene and finanacial pool from which to choose a hubby -desire to show men that they can be equal or superior to them in mental pursuits and games [ QUOTE ] -what kind of bankroll do you believe college students have to start playing online? [/ QUOTE ] As much as daddy's credit card will allow. |

Re: College Kids
I am a college student, I think geeky kids play more online, B&M might be close to a split.
I don't know any college women that play so I don't really have any idea. I deposited 50 dollars. I would say 50-300 maybe more if they are a rich kid or big time gambler. A few of my roomates just put money online for the first time and they each put in $200. However they have no concept of bankroll management so that will probably dissapear pretty quickly. |

Re: College Kids
1. I have no friends at school because I'm a loser and never go outside, so I'll pick geeky students. If I played in home games I'm sure it'd be frat boys, that's what I saw the most of the few times I played at the casino near my school last year.
2. Usually when I see girls playing it's because their boyfriends dragged them out to the casino to play a crapshoot tournament, they're often fairly hot. In cash games I've seen 1 hot college ageish chick, 1 normal one, the rest of the women I have played with are old beasts. 3. A bad one. I started with 50, reloaded like 50, then put on like 100 or something and that was it. If I had started out playing limit poker online instead of NL I probably would have had to put less, but I'm obsessive and refuse to do anything without doing it right, so I'm sure I'm the exception. I really doubt that I would have dumped more than like 300 or so trying to learn before I quit. Another person I used to know has put what I estimate to be 6k-8k (fairly conservative, 10-12k is possible) online and pissed it all away because he refused to learn and has to play in bigger games where people respect his raises and then stack him anyway. |

Re: College Kids
At my school, which happens to be a tech school, I'd say its equal. The frat boys have their own game, as do the geeks. I've played in both, and I can say most people in general are just awful at poker. However, the kids at my school generally are smart enough to realize that if they aren't winning by playing online, they shouldn't play there. So, I suppose its mostly kids who dedicate themselves to learning to play better than average are the ones who play online at my school.
As for females, I agree with the other post about the boyfriend who dragged them into playing, as well as girls who feel they can do anything men can do just for the sake of doing it. Though, its pretty rare in my experience in any case. Regarding bankroll, a lot of kids definitely put in like $50 or $100, just enough to play low limits and try it out. They usually piss it away. I personally waited a long time to deposit real money. I played an obscene amount of free games online, and my home game with my H.S. friends is on the average exceptionally strong (which includes some popular forum members here) and that's where I gained a lot of my skills. By the time I first deposited, it was $500 to get the typical $100 PP bonus... and I never lost it. I suppose thats the exception to the rule. For my friends at college who are marginal players at best and thinking about playing online, I suggest they deposit $500 initially and maintain the 300bb rule, and/or play low buyin SNGs until they get better. |

Fratboys, without question. -what kind of young women play? are there specific characteristics to their personality? Women that play need to be competitive and be able to hold their own in a male-dominated game (e.g. tomboys). -what kind of bankroll do you believe college students have to start playing online? $50-$200. |

Re: College Kids
I don't really see the point in asking us who we "think" plays more, or what type of women play. No one here knows and will all give bad responses unless they have actually done the research to find out which is very doubtful.

Re: College Kids
Well.. at least theres a bit of a trend forming from these (albeit limited amount of posts) which should help with the research. Slightly more frat boys, competitive women, and pretty low college student bankroll appear to be prevailing themes.
