Default Interesting Heads Up Match

This is from the first round of a $13 double shootout to the Sunday 700K. Villain was aggressive and fairly good, we had considerable history prior to this, as I'd first been on the button when he was BB, then in SB when he was BB, with him on button when I was BB. When blinds got higher, I raised fairly aggressively from the button, and he often called or min-re-raised and led aggressively at the flop. Several times, I pushed over his leads, at least once not showing and twice showing big hands (bottom set and a flush). He often raised when I limped from the SB, and would always bet aggressively in a blind battle, whether or not he was the pre-flop raiser. I had once called a raise of my BB from his button with KTs, then check-raised all-in with nothing but a backdoor flush draw on a J-high flop. He knows this because he called with AA (whoops).

Here's the hand history, I haven't commented on any of the hands here, so feel free to ask questions and please offer criticism/advice.

Oh, one thing I will comment on now, I do a lot of min-raising before the flop here, which I don't usually do, but it was sort of a blocking bet, since there was a good chance he'd raise to 3x if I didn't beat him to the punch.

Nice job. But just reading it was making me think too hard, lol. Playing heads-up well takes sooooo much concentration.

In general, your play seems really passive to me, and he was nice enough to pay you off bigtime on that one hand where your jacks beat his deuces. Other than that, I was sort of wondering where you'd make a stand. He was definitely the aggressor for most of the battle. Were you just trying to set him up for a hand where you'd let him hang his own rope, like the Jacks beating Deuces hand?

I think you might find my criticism of your playing a bit harsh. I know you are a good player, I’m familiar with your posts, but I was not impressed by your work here. Sometimes you played timidly, sometimes you overplayed, but you never seem to put him to a very tough decision. Frankly, he was outplaying you and controlling the table until that one hand where you won most of your chips.

Comments on individual hands:

#115
You know this guy is an aggressive player. Why did you let him take control of this hand when you have A8o? Reraise him preflop, reraise him on the flop, do something. You seem to finally wake up on the turn, but hell, he might have made his hand by then.

#116
I would have bet more on the flop to represent an Ace. Also, no way in hell would I have folded that river. You probably lost, but you will win often enough in that situation to make it a profitable call.

#117, #118, #119
You were dealt K7, A3, and A2. Your opponent won all three hands without a showdown. That should tell you something.

#121
That all-in with second pair is a terrible move. You will only be called by hands that beat you.

#122
You will have position on the flop, and you are getting 3:1 on your call. You need to call this. You’re just letting your opponent know that he can steal your blind with a min-raise.

#124
You should reraise him preflop occasionally. This would have been a good opportunity to do that. You need to mix it up a bit more. You’re being too predictable.

#125
That [censored] doesn’t have an Ace. Reraise him on the flop (well, you don’t have to, but this would have been another good opportunity to do something).

#127
Again, I hate this all-in with middle pair. You will only be called by hands that beat you.

#129
So what’s going on here? You have top pair, and yet this guy is again controlling the action. It’s a good top pair, but it’s not a great top pair. Stop letting him see more cards for free.

You go all-in with middle pair, and with top pair, you basically check/call to the river.

Luckily, your opponent played this hand like an idiot. He was controlling the game, and he threw it all away on bottom pair.

#134
Do you want him to fold preflop? Try to get him to commit all his chips. Raise him a bit preflop, and more on the flop.

Overall, I just see a lack of imagination. You played your cards rather than your opponent. Your opponent was much better at playing you (especially hands 117, 118, and 119).

That's exactly what I was doing. In these kinds of heads up battles where both players have relatively small stacks, you only need to win one or two big pots to cripple your opponent. Once he gets below about 15 BB's, his options became rather limited, and the player with the stack has a big advantage. I felt that would be especially true here, since this guy relied so much on big bets. He seemed willing to build a pot almost every hand, so I felt I could keep the pot small until I found the spot I was looking for, let him bet my hand for me, and then cripple him.

Also, I guess you can't tell this from the hand history, but I showed my A8 in the first hand, as I was already thinking that the next time I put that much money in the pot, I was going to have a real hand. I didn't get a real hand as soon as I would have liked, but it happened eventually, and things played out pretty much the way I wanted them to. That made me more hesitant to get too aggressive early, as I'd already won a substantial pot with an aggressive move.

Thanks for the feedback.

I found you tended to play far too passively and scared. You keep overbetting all-in when you hit top pair rather than betting for value. You let opponent push you off some good hands. And you showed WAY too many hands. Were you trying to tell him "Look, I'm tight/solid, please run over me when I don't show strength"?

As a general note, you should be way more aggressive playing hu, and be much less concentrated on the "true" value of the hands you hold or hit, while not overplaying a hand when you actually do have one. For instance, going over the hands, it seems that you limp way too much in position, and in general not using position for your advantage almost at all. Strong use of position and non-stop aggression (starting PF!) are key to winning HU.

I believe I only pushed top pair once, and that was actually a smaller bet than it seemed, since Villain was short stacked. The hand played out very similarly the the bluff in which I was caught prior to our heads up match.

The point of showing the hands was possibly to embolden him a little, but also to set up some future plays. When Villain was below 10 BB's, for instance, I showed the good hands I was pushing pre-flop, because I expected to be pushing many not-so-good ones as well. As it turns out, I was catching a lot of good ones, but I was trying to induce incorrect folds, which in my opinion is the biggest mistake he could make when short. As you can see, he actually does fold quite often to pre-flop pushes when he's got 5-6 BB's.

I also am setting up opportunities to bully on the cheap once Villain gets short. A 10-15 BB stack can be very awkward to play, and against a short opponent, the bluff call and the min bet can be very effective. Basically, if Villain takes a stab at the pot, you can call and then force him to decide whether to commit his stack to a second barrel or give it up. Similarly, with a min-bet stab you can put Villain in the position of calling off 10% of his stack with a marginal hand with the threat of larger bets on future streets, or committing his entire stack if he wants to play back at you. Essentially, with one bet you are threatening Villain's entire stack. My hope is that showing top pair in this spot will make Villain hesitant to commit with a hand like bottom pair when I make the same bet with air. This wasn't really something I ended up needing to do, but it's what I was trying to set up.

I'm guessing the A3 pre-flop fold is an example of a good hand I gave up without a fight. Against this opponent, I really felt like A3 was going to be a semi-bluffing hand. Unless I hit my A, I was going to have either bottom pair or just high card, and while I know those can be decent heads up hands, they just weren't the sort I was looking to play a big pot with.

Thanks. I think my usual heads up strategy is closer to what you describe, and I agree that I probably did play a little too passively here, but even more important than aggression I think is exploiting your opponent's mistakes. My read of this guy, one in which I was fairly confident, was that he was not efficient with his bluffs. He committed more of his stack than was necessary, and several times had released hands when I played back at him after putting in several big bets. He was often betting or overbetting pot on the flop and raising 3x or more often pre-flop, so I felt like roping him in would be the best way to exploit that.

As I mentioned before, I felt like it would only take one big pot against this guy to put me in a really profitable spot where I could be selectively, inexpensively aggressive and chip away at him. He seemed willing to play a big pot whenever, so all I had to do was pick my spot.
