Default oops, removed the .bat file extention

I were trying to get Windows XP to stop hiding the extention of my .bat files, but instead I removed the the extention from the list of registred file types, so now I'll have to put it back...

Unfortunately I can't remember what program/file Windows used to execute the .bat files, so I'm stuck.

HEEELP!

I don't have an XP box here too look at, but .bat files aren't even listed in the registered file types and they work fine. How did you "unregister" it in the first place?

If this happened very recently, could you roll back one restore point to fix it?

Can't you just rename your .bat files to .cmd files and run them that way? .bat is deprecated in XP.

Yes I'd like to know how you unregistered .bat files as well. As BiPolar points out, they are not listed in the registered file types. As has been said, you can call them .cmd files and that will work fine.

On my XP box, I see the extension .bat is associated with type "batfile"(\HKCRR\.bat\ value (Default) "batfile".
The open command for batfile is "%1"%*.(HKCR\batfile\shell\open\Command value (Default) = "%1"%* Nothing I can find that shows cmd.exe as the interpreter, though. I can't find anything for ".cmd".

Also, even though it's in the registry, none of the stuff for .bat files shows up in Explorer.

They do show up using assoc and ftype at a command prompt.

I searched again, and .cmd and cmdfile are in HKCR in the registry, with same "open" command as for ".bat"

I added a filetyped called "BAT" and then it asked me if it I wanted it linked to MS-BATCH files, which I answered yes to. Then I figured that I should look for an extention called MS-BATCH on the list, so I unregistred the "BAT" extention that I had just registred, and pooof! Windows XP didn't recognise my .bat files anymore.

I could, but I had no idea that there existed .cmd files

I have now registred a .bat extention and linket it to the .cmd, and it seems to work.

Thanks again.
