Default iffy turn raise

Good 40 game at ye ole Borg.

I either have a solid image or a straightforward tight image. I've been on a pretty good run and haven't been seen getting out of line.

I open-raise black KK from EMP, and BB calls. BB here is one of the few good, thinking players at this table.

Flop is A44r. BB bets. I call intending to raise any turn.

Spew?

Then just raise the flop if this was your line.

I think, as a way to try to blast out an Ace, is a much better way to look like AK/AQ. The real problem is that if a good player called in the BB after a seemingly tight opener early and bets that flop, it's with something like AQ/AJ or maybe 44 and he's not folding.

I thought about that, but figured the turn raise would have more oopmh. AK seemed unlikely given my holding, and he would have checked a 4 on the flop. So a weaker A seemed like his most likely hand, which would likely go into call-down mode after a flop raise, but could lay it down given a flop smoothcall + turn raise combo.

Are you nuts? You've played that game enough times to know that nobody folds top pair, especially if it's an Ace. Hell, I RARELY fold top pair heads up or even 3 ways in that game, because of the general stupidity of most of the regulars.

Who was the BB, anyway? If he is a TAGgish thinking player as you say then
1 - I probably know him by name and playing style
2 - he won't fold anything that beats you but will fold lower pairs that you beat.

What does this turn raise accomplish? Why not just call him down, win the max when you're ahead, lose the least when you're behind, and take a chance to river a King?

He obviously sees himself as behind when making this play. I assume a check behind on the river? You usually shouldn't bet once he calls tha turn. He could be putting you to the test on the ace though, which argues for calling. I hate calling down usually, but in this spot I think he will fold better hands much less often then he will fold worse hands. I usally like the turn raise, but this spot seems to iffy for me and more like a desperate spew. I expect him to follow through on the turn and check the river with many weak holdings, although some aces being a part of that. I would call down and bet the river if/when checked to. River betters?

Hey Drew,

Normally I would just call down here (WA/WB), or maybe raise the flop and check the turn. However, it felt like at least some of the stars were aligned for me to try this play. I'd never played with this villain before (as such, he hadn't seen my penchant for retarded turn raises). Given my thus far winning/straightforward image, it seemed possible he would give me credit for AK/AA and lay down a weaker A.

Thinking more about it, you're probably right in that the most likely outcome is that he calls with any A and lays down lower PPs.

How'd you do in the 80 game? It was looking pretty good Fri..
