Celsius versus Fahrenheit
A couple of decades ago we in Canada had the Celsius system imposed upon us by our Governement. We complained, and ranted on about it, but after awhile it just became normal.
After reading about the metric system in another post, I got to thinking about the celsius system versus the fahrenheit system. In fahrenheit system water freezes at 32 degrees and boils at 212 degrees (approximately, depending on atmospheric pressure). In celsius water freezes at 0 degrees and water boils at 100 degrees. Anything "minus" is below the freezing point. Now, as a conditioned "celsius," user, I have to wonder why the whole world hasn't switched to a system that has much more logical benchmarks for 0 degrees and 100 degrees. Anyone know why the USA still uses Farhenheit? |

Anyone know why the USA still uses Farhenheit? [/ QUOTE ] because this country is full of morons. Switching would lead to anarchy and riots in trailer parks all across the country edit to add: switching to metric I mean....just switching to celcius alone would be kinda retarded unless you are gunna switch everything to the metric system |

Re: Celsius versus Fahrenheit
I flew into Toronto from San Francisco once. It was February. As we were rolling to the gate at Pearson, the pilot got on and told us, "The local temperature is minus 8 degrees." The whole cabin gasped. Then she said, "Hehe. Sorry, that's about 18 degrees Fahrenheit."
In a nutshell, we use Fahrenheit because we can. |

Re: Celsius versus Fahrenheit
Because one system is not inherently superior to another, and we have a very large population. The difficulty of changes like this would seem to go up with the number of adherents who would have to switch.

We use it because we prefer it and we haven't allowed our government to "impose" a system of measurement on us yet. |

motorholdem, what's the deal with driveways and parkways, huh? [/ QUOTE ] Beats me. We all use the term driveways (which are places to park), but I thought parkways was a US thing..We use highway.. But while we are here, things sent by "ship" are called "cargo", but things sent by "car" are called "shipments." The whole world is goofy. |

Anyone know why the USA still uses Farhenheit? [/ QUOTE ] The same reason why we still use yards, feet, inches, and also the same reason why we don't see Sacajawea dollar coins too often any more. |
