Wife's reaction to satelite win

$100+20 satelite to $1000+60 tournament. 147 runners, 14 paid a seat. I won a seat. I'm like dancing around, all happy. Walk in the house holding the slip that shows what I won.

W: What is this?
beenben: [I let her read it]
W: What's this mean?
beenben: It means I won a seat in a thousand dollar tournament.
W: It's on Thursday at noon. That's the worst possible time.
beenben: I know, but I'm sure I can l find someone to watch the kids (I watch the kids during the day and work 3rd shift)
W: How much was it?
beenben: $100
W: I don't think you should've spent a $100 on that. That's a lot of money.
beenben: Congratulations, Ben, good job.
W: How well do you have to do to get your $100 back.
beenben: If I get in the top 36, I'll make several thousand dollars. If I win the whole thing I'll get around $100,000. It's got a $200,000 guaranteed prize pool.


We make ok money, but have some debt that she'd rather we didn't have. nothing outlandish though. I'd like to get rid of the debt as well but seriously, it's $100.

I don't think I have a question but would appreciate comments, advice, etc.

first of all, nicely done. second of all, if you're that excited about turning $100 into $1000, then you probably shouldn't have played and your wife has a point. thirdly, my friend and his wife do their monthly budget and allocate x amount of dollars for entertainment, which they each spend as they please. so, you should have a certain amount of money that it is clear you are allowed to blow.

I very rarely play satellites where a win would mean a semi-significant strategy adjustment.

This includes stuff like, "I don't want to play that satellite for the Monday night event on (whatever site). GF and I usually go out to dinner on Mondays."

Something like that anyway.

It's not like I was elated. but I was happy. I was a short stack as the blinds skyrocketed and inew the right strategery, had people fold for me, and outlasted 133 people. but her reaction really put a damper on my happiness.
