Default Is mild strategy discussion at the table that bad?

Ok so I'm in the 500 game @ the bike and this maniac who had been pushing blind preflop etc straddles. EP raises... everybody ends up mucking maniac pushes blind and ep calls.... ep has JJ maniac has trash...

Regular in LP proudly states he mucked AK because he knew that would happen. I stated well actually that getting it all in against JJ and a random hand is a great result for AK. All of a sudden some random dude sitting at the other end of the table goes ballistic...

How much does the bike pay you to give poker lessons??? Who made you the professor.... blah blah etc etc.... He was actually quite angry and disrupted my serenety...

WTF? he went on for a minute and a half and I just dropped it and didn't bother responding although I alsmost felt like being a dick and patronizing him.

Why give anyone at your table poker lessons? It's not against the rules but I can't see it as helping your game either.

i wasn't really giving lessons I made one comment... I get what your saying and I agree but 90% of the people wouldn't get what I was saying anyways if they didn't already understand. People talk strategy at the table all the time but 90% of what I hear is wrong. The point is why go ballistic like that?

I think people overestimate the effect this "advice" will have.

I see posts here all the time about how you have to keep the table laughing and happy, etc and not make it seem like it is serious business.

MrBallistic seems to take that viewpoint to the extreme. Or maybe he just doesn't like the prototypical "poker professor know-it-all" (not saying that you were one).

You weren't lecturing or berating. I have no problem with that.

But, PokerStove sez the equities:

Hand 1: 47.2466 % { JJ }
Hand 2: 37.3871 % { AKo }
Hand 3: 15.3664 % { random }

So, not bad for AK, but not 'great'.

this surprises me a little.
But this would also include the possibility of Hand 3 holding one of the A's or K's that the Hand 2 guy would want.
It also includes other GOOD random holdings all the way up to AA.

If you more narrowly define Hand 3's hold-em within the 'trash-hand' realm instead of just ANY hand then I suspect the AK vs. JJ will be closer to 50/50 against each other as we might expect.

However, perhaps you just let it be random for this guy since AK guy obviously didn't know whether he had trash or something awesome.

I don't really talk strategy at the table. When somebody does I usually just nod in agreement and maybe offer an 'oh sure' and perhaps try to change the conversation to something interesting...such as the weather or baseball scores.

Every once in awhile I accidentally end up giving my true opinion of somebody's strategy comment. Such as laughing at the guy who mentioned that T5 is actually a really solid hand because it can make all the straights.

I really thought he was joking. He wasn't.

Some people have fun at poker tables by talking about poker. It's okay to engage them a bit. I just wouldn't let them get inside your head and how you play.
