Re: If you see your Congressman on this list, call him now
thanks for this list... i have a quick question before i make some phone calls...
can someone elaborate on what exact role the conferees have on this bill? i'm wondering whether my phone call should be centered on my opposition to the internet gambling ban IN GENERAL, or my opposition to the internet gambling bill being ATTACHED to the DoD bill.... thanks in advance... |

Re: If you see your Congressman on this list, call him now
The Armed Services Committee would only have to do with the rider attached to the DoD bill, right? Internet gambling (or internet commerce in general) certainly isn't within the purview of the ASC ordinarily, i.e. when "Dr." Frist isn't sticking riders into defense legislation, is it?

Re: If you see your Congressman on this list, call him now
Yeah, the only reason SASC and HASC are involved is the fact that the language may hitch a ride on "their" bill.
From the standpoint of lobbying effectively, Nate is right to target these members. |

Re: If you see your Congressman on this list, call him now
Well, the entire Conference Committee will be involved in deciding what ends up on the final conference report, which each member of the committee will then vote on. The reason why most members of Armed Services are annoyed w/ Frist's tactics is because this rider is obviously not germane to the DoD Authorization bill and they want a clean bill so that it faces minimal resistance when it reaches the floor of each chamber. Let's be clear, however, the Armed Services Committee members are not objecting because they disagree with the gambling ban.
Basically when you call your Rep/Senator you should object to both the bill and to the process by which they are attempting to pass the bill into law. Crap like this is what's wrong with Congress. When nongermane items get tacked onto bigger appropriations bills they are never examined/marked up by the appropriate Senate Committee and don't receive consideration or debate by the Senate. The internet gambling bill is just crap, as we all know. |

Re: If you see your Congressman on this list, call him now
How is Frist pronounced? Does it rhyme with "list" or does it rhyme with "heist"? I need to know for my phone call(s) later today.
Hillary Clinton could be huge here. She is an AS member, and we all know that she is one of the front-runners to be the Democratic Presidential candidate in 2008. It certainly won't hurt to mention to her office that a political victory could be won right here and now against Frist, a possible future opponent. I'm from NY so I'm calling her, and I would encourage all NY'ers (and even non-NY'ers) to do the same. |

Re: If you see your Congressman on this list, call him now
Rhymes with list.
Also, for those in Oklahoma, there's a typo in the list. It's Sen. Inhofe, not Imhofe. Not trying to be a nit, but it can never hurt to pronounce the guy's name properly when you're on the phone with his staff. |

Yeah, the only reason SASC and HASC are involved is the fact that the language may hitch a ride on "their" bill. [/ QUOTE ] Nevertheless, they apparently represent nearly 2/3 of the conferees (57 of 89 by my count). So if they're truly in solidarity on this issue, we should be fine. Right?
