Lawyers
There are a couple of lawyers on here, so I have a question. If I went to a lawyer and asked if I commited a crime, how much should I expect to pay for this? Would it work out to a hour of their time? Or, I wish, is it like some mechanics and the estimate is free?

Re: Lawyers
Many lawyers will give you an initial consultation for free. Some won't. Just ask around.

Re: Lawyers
Initial consultations are usually free, unless travel is involved.
If you're also asking about how fees are set for criminal cases, here are the basics. Hourly fees may be charged if the person has not yet been arrested or indicted. But once the criminal proceedings have actually begun, the custom typically is to structure fees according to when a case might get resolved. In other words, a lawyer might charge one amount for the pretrial stages of a matter, and another amount if the case actually goes to trial. Most appeals are handled on a flat fee basis. |

Re: Lawyers
A lot depends on where you're located. You might pay more in a major city than you would in a rural area or small town. Other than that, Wynton's reply in this thread is pretty much correct.

Re: Lawyers
Awesome, thanks Wynton. What happens if it is concluded that a crime has indeed occured? Are they obligated to say something to the authorities?
