Ok villain in this hand had been limping strong hands sometimes, min raising sometimes with them but not only with them and limping with trash as well sometimes. My thinking on this afterwards was that i should have led out on the flop and then if i got raised, then i could decide what to do. How should i have played this?

Yes, I would lead the flop for 600 or so and slow right down if called. After checking, opp could well just be throwing out a c-bet but it would be awfully expensive for you to find out if you're wrong.
