I don't quite understand why pot is illegal. I am trying to remain un-biased. It seems that it is not extemely addictive and has no worse side effects than cigarettes or alchohol. What is the reason that legalizing it is such a liberal idea that seemingly the majority opposes?

There is no good reason for it.
The "gateway drug" rationale doesn't even make sense. If it were a "gateway drug," then why are there so many [censored] potheads? (You know, people who tried pot and DIDN'T move on to other, harder drugs) |

Their rationale is that people that try pot are more likely to do harder drugs then someone who never did drugs. The problem is that people that are older the 8 are also more likely to do hard drugs then those under 8. Perhaps we should make it illegal to live past 8?
In other words, correlation !=causation |

In other words, correlation !=causation [/ QUOTE ] I actually would agree that pot would have a "gateway drug" potential if it were more taboo. I did quite a few interesting things in college, and I will say that for most people, a light goes off when you do your first "hard" drug (mainly because your mind says "hey, this isn't so bad!" after years of being lied to that it will destroy your life), and all of a sudden the other "hard" drugs don't seem like a big deal. A lot of that has to do with illegality, but pot is so accepted by today's culture that there's not even enough of a taboo to make that "breakthrough." Think about how many people there are that say "oh, well I'll smoke pot every now and then...but I'll never do cocaine/ecstacy/meth/heroin/acid! |

Back in the 1930's we had an immigration problem with Mexico. U.S. laborers were having a hard time getting jobs and Mexicans were seen as getting in the way. Mexicans were perceived as pot smokers and outlawing pot was seen as a way by politicians to kick Mexicans back to their side of the boarder.
