For all that\'s wrong with Play Poker like the Pros...
I feel that an appropriately modified version of Andrew Glazer's introduction belongs at the beginning of every poker book.

The O8B section is decent for the limited amount of pages.

I got it for the razz section and I thought it was great. It helped me handle the $1/2 tables on Stars fairly easily. I would have to say I was pleased with the information in that chapter. That was all I read of it though, I need to go back and check out the Andrew Glazer introduction.

I must admit that seeing Andys name here brought back alot of emotions.
He was the first man I ever met when I arrived in vegas to meet up with Jan Fisher and Lynda Johnson. We kept in touch often. I thoroughly enjoyed his company and his articles he wrote. As for helmuth books I really have no opinion because I have heard nothing good to bring me to read them. Andy you are missed immensely. jim |

Re: For all that\'s wrong with Play Poker like the Pros...
I just read the introduction. For those of you not lucky enough to have a copy, Andrew discusses how to read Play poker like the Pros in a way that will help them get the most out of the material. Here are a few things he covers in the introduction. It is really nicely done.
1. Read actively, not passively. 2. Don't try to take on too much at once. 3. Apply the concepts into your actual game a little at a time to see how well they work. 4. Always be thinking how the concepts in the book might change with changing circumstances, table conditions, etc. Think how you will fit it into your own playing style. 5. Don't make this the only poker book you read. 6. Practice at the right limits and don't get down on yourself for mistakes. 7. Rereading a section is not a sign of low IQ. |

Re: For all that\'s wrong with Play Poker like the Pros...
The book is not at all horrible like so many people seem to think it is, although its flawed in choosing its target market it still provides some really solid foundation for many of the games within the book (except the often criticized Hold'em section). The Razz section is not as good as Sklansky on Razz (SOP)of course, but its the second best section in print to date that I have seen and one of the best primers of any game to date. The Stud /8 sections are pretty good, and the O8 section is far from horrible.
Outside of the hold'em advice which is questionable, I think the real complaint most people had with the book was Helmouth's ego-boosting style. Personally although I think its silly, it made me smile on occasion when you see the cracks in Phil's armor... his shtick is kinda funny at times. Of course its not a brilliant and expansive work ala TOP, SSHE, etc, but it is one of the better primer books on the market. TT [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] |
