Default Things that are negotiable in price that you didn\'t realize...

So,

Some things in life are very fixed in price, while others are very negotiable (cars, homes, etc).

What items are standardly negotiated for that people don't know about?

For example, I just saw a post on fatwallet that mentioned that you should always negotiate on mattresses.

Anything else like this? I'm always looking for good deals, and wondering if i've been missing out on anything.

Any big purchase is usually negotiable, you can even negotiate at best buy.

Yeah I didn't know that until my roommmate negotiated a floor model LCD down several hundred dollars below the floor model price. They didn't seem to think that it was unusual as she got them to go down 3 different price ranges. She got a $1800 TV for $600 jsut because it had been sitting on the shelf showing DVD's for awhile. Maybe the life is less than a new one, but it's an $1800 TV for $600! If it lasts 2 or 3 years, it's a deal.

Oh yeah, and my roommate is a finance director for a Audi/VW dealership. She says all big ticket items are like cars: very negotiable.

The best place to get a good discount on just about anything over a couple hundred bucks, is at a mom and pop shop. Pay in cash, and watch the price drop.

Those should be negotiable too. She was jsut trying to find the best TV she could for under $700, so she picked one that had already been marked down a bit and worked off a few hundred more.

You can do some pretty good negotiating at furniture shops.

I've had a lot of luck haggling for things that don't seem to belong.

I used to live in Bushwick (which was a fairly rough neighborhood in Brooklyn at the time) and for some reason at the local bulletproof liquor store, they'd have some expensive single-malt scotch not displayed prominently.

I'd make offers on them for about 2 weeks 'til they accepted that NO ONE else was gonna buy it.

Basically, don't be afraid to make an offer. They might say no - who cares? Worst that happens is they ask you to leave.
