This has to be rare
Today, an Arizona pitcher issued four consecutive walks in extra innings to lose the game. I can't believe that this has happened very often in history.

Yeah. I've seen a couple guys combine for that, but never a solo.

Re: This has to be rare
I'm pretty sure that Jae Seo did it this year when he was still with the Dodgers. But it might have been a single and 3 walks.

I'm sure ESPN.com's Elias Says column will come through with an extensive history of this rarity...

Re: This has to be rare
I only caught glimpses of tv today, but didn't we also have a triple play, and a kid who hit a grand slam on the first pitch of his first MLB at-bat?

Re: This has to be rare
The kid who hit the grand-slam on his first pitch was only the 3rd time ever that had happened.
One guy did it for Fla last year. And it was previously done in 1898. 4 straight walks to lose in extra-innings has certainly been done before but not very often of course. When I broadcast in the minor-leagues I saw a pitcher throw 22 consecutive balls in the 1st inning (including 3 wild-pitches and 1 hit-batter) before he finally fired a strike in there. I also saw Jae Seo commit 3 balks in an inning in the minors (and a 4th balk in the next inning). He kept failing to come to a complete stop. Last week at a minor-league game in Memphis I saw a pitcher come to the stretch, and while standing there he just dropped the ball right on his foot. Balk!!! |

Last week at a minor-league game in Memphis [/ QUOTE ] I keep meaning to catch a game at AutoZone Park, but I keep telling myself, "I'll wait until later in the season, when the weather cools off." Next thing I know, the minor-league season is over. |
