best way to secure cash in an apartment room
In about a week I will be moving into my new apartment with 4 college roommates. I will be sharing a room with one of them, the other 3 have their own rooms. I don't usually spend a lot of money, but I will be playing much more live poker so at any time I will have between 1k and 10k in cash (I hate ATMs, so I'd rather not just keep it in the bank and constantly be withdrawing). What is the best way to secure this? I trust my 4 roommates, but there will be many people in my room that I don't trust, and I won't always be there to watch my cash. what is the best way to keep my money safe? Although they are clunky, unattractive, and conspicuous, should I just drop $150 on a personal safe? Any advice is apprecitated.

mount it in the bottom of a desk drawer, cover with crap and make sure no one sees you take money from it |

hmm, not only is that relatively conspicuous (I was thinking of hiding a safe in the back of my closet or something), but it looks like one swing of a sledgehammer would absolutely pulverize it.

Get over hating ATMs. Completely irrational. Also 10k in cash if you aren't going to be playing live often is bad since you're missing out on interest. Deposit in an internet-based, interest-bearing checking account that covers ATM fees.

Re: best way to secure cash in an apartment room
My roommates and I have a safe. It doesn't look like a safe, it looks like a big lunchbox, except that we all have a key to it. Just do that and put it where you have a whole bunch of books or under your bed. We've never had a problem, and we've had quite a few parties. I guess someone could steal the whole safe, but if you're that paranoid (not saying you are) then you could handcuff it to something. However, with the handcuffs comes the more obvious suggestion that valuables are inside the "lunchbox".

Just use a bank, keeping a lot of cash in a room your sharing with someone is just a bad idea. Even if you trust the person they are still going to have lots of friends over. It isn't worth the stress.

What about if you just have a couple hundred? Keep it all in your wallet?
