My question is why didn't you bet the turn? In a 4-handed game, it's very likely the small blind may have been raising with top pair, and when he checks to you on the turn it suggests that he didn't like your call on the flop (unless he's sand bagging with a set). You have a big hand and a pretty safe looking board, I think you should bet the turn to make him pay to hit another 8. Instead you checked behind on the turn, gave a free card, and you're facing a sizeable bet with no idea whether you're ahead or not. The better play would be to let it go since you gave a free card, and probably the worst card for your hand came on the river, and your opponent has bet it. The alternative is to hope that your opponent was raising with pocket nines or maybe an A-3 or something, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

You need to raise more preflop, 40c with one guy already limping in just isn't going to do much to thin the field and offers the limper really good implied odds.
Pot the flop. Medium pocket pairs, whiffed over cards and all kinds random stuff will still come for the ride and it makes it less likely you'll see a stupid bet from SB. As you played it you don't know if he did this with a good hand or because he thinks you are weak. After you call the flop and he checks the turn he is outright telling you that is c/r was full of sh!t so bet, get value out of the weaker hands that call and don't give him a free shot if he's got something like AT. As played you have to call the river since this is a missed draw/badly played piece of rubbish very often and calling is definitely +EV. |

I hope my previous post wasn't misunderstood. I agree with what the other posters are saying. You need to play this hand aggressively. I just don't advocate playing it weakly, and then paying off a bet on the river when the worst card comes off.
You need to make him pay, make him pay, and then when the 8 comes off, your river decision will be easier since you made your opponent pay to draw out (and it is very likely you could end up picking off a bluff too). |
