I took a job out of college here in North Carolina for a few months. Usually if I need money I'll go to the atm in my home town because there isn't a fee to take out money, but out here it's 2-3 dollars everywhere and since I'm lazy and cheap I don't go to the atm's, I just use my credit card.
The only time I eat out is at a china buffet or a barbecue place and I just put the check on my credit card, but since I don't have and cash with me I just leave the tip on the credit card. And I usually eat at both places a few times a week. I've noticed at both places they don't pull the money out of the register and give it directly to the waitresses, but put it in an envelope with their name on it that's in the register. Should I tell the server I'm going to do this? I don't want them to think I'm stiffing them. Are servers used to tips going on credit cards nowadays and don't think they're getting stiffed? It just seems like an awkward situation. |

Don't they look at the receipt and see what you tipped?

title fooled me here. if you tip cash, servers usually don't report the income and don't pay income tax on it. by leaving a CC trail, they have to pay tax.
but to answer your question, why would you worry about it? if they arn't used to people leaving a CC tip, and they get in a fit because they can't handle the anxiety of whether or not they got tipped, they should switch jobs. as long as you are actually tipping, you should feel fine. and if your job is much cooler than serving, take out $200 at a time, and leave a cash tip, just to make their day a little better. |

I have worked for tips before. Usually you get your credit card tips at the end of the day from a manager.

The servers are aware of the tip you leave them.

A tip for all; if you really like your service, tip something like 8% on your credit card and 15% in cash. They get that 15% really free and clear because it looks like you tipped 8%.
Of course, a lot of servers may just pocket it and not pay off their bussers/bartenders, but [censored] bussers/bartenders. |
