Hello,
I play a couple nights a week. Nothing special. One tourny at a time 5 or 6 multi's per week max so I try to be serious about each entry. These are examples from PokerRoom. Last night I played twice. I had a guy behind me go all-in after a big raise from me holding KK (with a caller in between who folded). I had him covered, easy call. He shows 63s and goes runner runner 6's to win. I then go to tourney 2 and around the third level come up with QQ UTG and throw in three big bets (preflop, post flop and turn) to have a guy call me down with 54o (he wins with a 4 on river for trip 4's). There were no over cards to my queens and no str8 or flush draws (he called with 54o pre flop and a pair of 4's post flop). He was not a big stack. Question: are these low entry tourneys all donkfests like this? Can you escape this by going to $20+ tourneys? Can the low entry events be beaten or is it just a numbers game by pushing your monster hands? VERY FRUSTRATING!!!! |

Buddy, you don't WANT to "escape" this. "Oh no, help me, the donks are making large mistakes and attempting to give me their money! MAKE IT STOP!"
The good thing about moving up to the $20s is that horrible players are still there, not that they're gone. |

Yeah, really frustrating to get your chips in as a huge favorite.
Don't be results oriented. The $20s are not much less donkfests than the $5s. Low entry events can be beaten by playing, well, like you're playing. Just don't get sucked out on. |

Bad players exist at all levels (eg. first guy out from this year's WSOP). They are the same players who give you lots of chips most of the time. Be thankful for them. |

Bad beats always happen. It's like the famous tagline:
There are eight million stories in the Naked City. This has been one of them. Get used to the suckouts, but as Sklansky states is the Thereom of Poker(my abridged version)-If you play correctly and lose; you win. You wnat these guys to call. Keep pounding on the proper play, be patient, and celebrate your successes when they come. |

That's the same mentality as saying "Are all $1000 tournaments full of nothing but pro's?"
The answer for both your question and mine is of course not. Don't ever underestimate your competition. A strategy that might beat a pro might fall flat against a donk, and vice versa. If you're a good player, then you should be able to cash and get an occasional top finish in a $5 MTT, just as easy as $10, $20, $30 and up tournament. Of course as the purse gets bigger the competition tends to get tougher, but you still have to play well to win a $5 MTT, just like you do any other. |
