Default Response letter from Sen Kyl...

I am a registered voter in AZ and after writing a very well spoken, heart-felt letter to Senator Kyl, this is the response I received:
------------------------------------------------------
" Dear Mr. X:

Thank you for contacting my office concerning Internet gambling.

Gambling over the Internet poses a greater threat to individuals than any other form of gambling. Unlike gambling at casinos, where an individual must physically travel to the location (and has to prove he or she is of age), gambling over the Internet provides a quick and easy way for people to lose large sums of money without a check of their age or identity. In addition, because of the anonymous nature of the activicty, the Departments of Justice and State warn of the vast potential for money-laundering through gambling wagers and payoffs. All major sports organizations in the country and the state attorneys general oppose Internet gambling. Bill Saum of the National Collegiant Athletic Association has warned that it poses a great threat to college students.

As you may know, H.R. 4411 passed the House of Representatives with bipartisan support by a vote of 317 to 93. It provides strong enforcement mechanisms, including prohibiting financial institutions from accepting or paying money for Internet gambling. The purpose of this bill is to cut the money flow to Internet gambling websites. This bill is now going to be considered by the Senate.

Please keep in touch.

Sincerely,

Jon Kyl
United States Senator
----------------------------------------------------------

Kyl is clearly a pig-headed individual who is pushing an agenda for moral and/or monetary/political motives. I was very respectful in my letter. I think I did a fairly good job representing our views. I also pointed out that no one activity should be judged based on a few cases of abuse. I urged him to consider the opinions of his constituancy in pushing this agenda (isn't that what senators are supposed to do - represent the people?) I have been reading a lot of articles/newspapers, etc on AZ and have yet heard any mention of voters here who actuall support this bill. I know Kyl is spearheading this movement, but it is fcked up for him not to at least consider the opinions of those who put him in office.

I will make sure to show up to the polls in November to vote for Jim Pedersen.

Good Day,

-dB

You can do virtually anything online now from banking to ordering groceries and Christmas presents. With gas prices where they are, this type of activity should be looked upon favorably.

The consumer has had better choices than ever before. Why is the internet all of the sudden evil?

Im fairly sure Senator Kyl did not read your letter.
Someone on his staff likely was supposed to. But basically they probably just skim it and send you a form letter on the issue.
Im not saying you should not write them because it lets them know people care about the issue but Im sure they carefully did not read the contents of your letter.

I agree. I recognize this letter as identical to one another Arizonan received from Kyl and posted here. I also agree that it is worth writing Kyl letters anyway, as he may not be so eager to push the bill through if he realizes he has very little public support.

Technically incorrect. Kyl has not introduced a bill. The House passed one is now pending on the Senate calendar, and my understanding is that Kyl has a draft circulating, but nothing has been formally introduced.

My letter from my Congressman:

Dear Michael:

Thank you for expressing your concerns about Internet
gaming legislation. I appreciate having the benefit of your
comments on this important issue.

In the 109th Congress, two pieces of Internet gaming
legislation were introduced in the House. Both H.R. 4411, the
Internet Gambling Protection and Enforcement Act, and
H.R. 4777, the Internet Gambling Prohibition Act, modify existing
prohibitions against interstate gambling to prohibit the use of fixed
or mobile communication facilities to transmit bets or wagers or to
accept payment or other proceeds from such transactions. Violators
may be subject to fines or imprisonment for up to five years.

You will be pleased to know that I voted against H.R. 4411
when it came before the full House for consideration on July 11,
2006. Unfortunately, it passed by a vote of 317 to 93 and has been
referred to the Senate for consideration. H.R. 4777 has yet to be
scheduled for debate on the floor, but if does, please know that I
will keep your comments in mind.

Once again, thank you for contacting me regarding the
issue of Internet gaming. Please do not hesitate to contact me again
about this or any other issue that concerns you.

Just some info...

My brother worked for sen john warner for a year, 2-3 years ago. One of the main things he did was write responses to letters. He said in general letters sent through real mail got a bit more personalized responses, though they were still pretty standard. Emails pretty much got form letter responses.

As far as john warner's involvement, he didn't know much of anything about the mail/letters coming in. I doubt he could even tell you what the form letter responses say. At best, he might know if there has been some noticeable long lasting volume of mail in supporting one side of a topic, but even that is pretty doubtful.

Take from that what you want.
