I couldn't be bothered to search for or link the other three.
But this is to settle a stupid bet with a co-worker. OK, so here's the insipid question: in the song Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini, is the swimsuit in question a yellow bikini with polka dots of an unspecified color? Or is it a bikini of unspecified color with yellow polka dots? The sentence structure of the title leads you to believe the polka dots are yellow. But the recent Yoplait yogurt commercial that uses this song places its actress in a yellow bikini with red polka dots. So the answer is still unknown... ( Here is a link to lyrics) |

lol, I have actually wonderedthi myself. I feel the swimsuit itself is supposed to be yellow and the polka dots are supposed to be a different color (I pictured black) or something. But I cannot be positive obviously.

this reminds me in high school, the principal made an announcement that they had found "a black woman's shoe" and was asking for the owner to come to the office. i was in english class so the teacher asked us what was wrong w/ the sentence we just heard over the PA.
again the next day, the principal announced she had a "black woman's shoe." on the third day she said she had "a woman's shoe but I dont know what color the woman who owns the shoe is." I vote the dots are yellow otherwise it's a misplaced adjective. |

Man, I hate this song.
I can't rememer ever describing anything by the color of its polka dots, so I'm voting that the swimsuit is yellow and the dots are of an unspecified color, even though the sentence, as written, suggests that the dots are yellow and it's the bikini's color that's a mystery. Young musicians, if you're reading this, let this be a lesson to you that punctuation is important. -McGee |
