Default Has there ever been a cinematic remake that \"beat\" the original?

As I was heading through Bristol yesteday I saw a billboard for The Wicker Man starring Nicolas Cage. I threw my arms up and howled in horror, which quite alarmed my brother, who was driving us at the time.

There seems to have been a proliferation in the last several years of __TERRIBLE__ remakes of movies that would better have been left alone. Off the top of my head, we can consider this latest atrocity, also The Omen, perhaps Dawn of the Dead, Alfie, Bedazzled (oh dear god), The Cabinet of Dr Caligari, USA (sorry guys) remakes of Ringu and Dark Water...and that awful remake of Taxi.

That's mostly only up to "D". Here's a link for Wiki's list of remakes.

What I want to know is, is there any cinematic remake that was substantially better than the original?? I couldn't think of one and hoped 2+2 might point us in the right direction. It makes me despair.

The only clause is it must be an original cinematic release which is then remade and released in cinemas again. No TV -> cinema or vice versa.

Actually, one of the worst was the remake of Psycho. that chilled my blood for all the wrong reasons.

Your input appreciated,
Pete

EDIT: oh god i just remembered how bad Burton's Planet of the Apes was...

The Fly
Probably Scarface (but I've never seen the original)

The Poseidon Adventure that we all know and love from 1972 is actually a remake of a silent film from 1912. It was the last movie shown on the Titanic as well. Obviously the 2006 remake was terrible, but the 1972 remake I'm sure eclipsed the 52 minute silent original.

This was the only thing that came to mind.

I've read a dozen books about the Titanic, and never heard of them showing a Posiedon-like film on board.

Cape Fear
Father of the Bride
Heat
Ocean's 11 (I actually found the first one a little boring; though I can totally understand disagreement on this one --- paging Andy Fox)
Red Dragon
Talented Mr Ripley

I apologize for this post. Apparently I have been duped by a rather believable story and fake IMDB page created by snopes.com. I did not realize until I just clicked the link at the bottom. This story is false. I had heard it from someone before, but apparently they had believed this stupid page before too. Disregard my first two posts in this thread as they are false.

Thank you.

A Star is Born -- the '54 remake of '37 original. That was the remake that shouldn't have been remade in '76.
