Trips vs. probably strt. My crazy hand of the day.
First, I made a min bet on 4th street, $1.
So 5th street is the key question. I went to war with my trips, reasoning that an aggressive villian would put the first raise in with a strt or flush draw. I was playing pretty aggressive, so villian may put me on a lot of hands besides trips. (Assuming that villian was paying attention). I reraise, and call his cap. I assume that this is standard. But two dimes says I am a 67:33 dog to his (presumed) made straight. Does anyone slow down on fifth? In my effort to play much more aggresive on early streets, I am raising and reraising quite a bit, since it seems to make villians play passively back at me. So bottom line, I lucked out, but did I play it OK? Thanks in advance. This seems fine. Maybe one too many bets on 5th street. When you pair your door card and someone raises you, alarm bells should tingle.

Re: Trips vs. probably strt. My crazy hand of the day.
When the other guy raises your open Nines on fifth, he should have you beaten. If he is at all sensible, you can only call the raise. The fact that he was willing to put in all those bets on sixth indicates that he is maniacally aggressive, so capping fifth probably wasn't all bad. I kinda figured him for AT in the hole even before I peeked, so his call on fourth was awful as well. Given his cluelessness, I think capping the river was OK. So I probably wouldn't have been quite as aggressive as you were, but I think you played it OK.

Re: Trips vs. probably strt. My crazy hand of the day.
I think 5th street is OK, you can't really give him credit for it after 1 raise, but after 2 raises you have to figure he has either a straight or higher trips
6th looks good 7th I'd probably slow down after the raise, given 5th street it looked like he had a straight or higher trips. On the river only an idiot would raise with his hand and an idiot he was. If you knew he was an idiot than I like your 3 bet on the river, without that knowledge I'd prefer to just call. |

Re: Trips vs. probably strt. My crazy hand of the day.
...higher trips
-- You know I totally discounted (which is a mistake) this cuz he gave no action on 3d and 4th. In this game, premium pairs almost always make themselves known. On the river I was sweating the possiblity that I had totally misread the hand, and had a higher boat. |

Re: Trips vs. probably strt. My crazy hand of the day.
I think you played the hand okay. I would never letg up, with trips especially if I hink my opponent is still on a draw. Sixth Street gave you a good Boat to play with and I probably would have forced him to cap on Sixth Steet.
It looks to me like he had a high pair with a shot at a straight or a flush. Sixth Street made his flush possibilities severely limited and there was a jack, king and ace all out for him so unless he had a Ten in the hole, he was trying to bluff you with a busted straight. |

Re: Trips vs. probably strt. My crazy hand of the day.
I like it. I wouldn't immediately give credit for the straight, but actually would have thought it more likely that he had 4 spades. I think playing hands aggressively, especially with re-draws to bigger hands, is the small difference between LAG and TAG that gets just that much more money in the end. A lot of chips are wasted with lost value bets in 7stud by players fearing their opponent made their best hand. A value bet, or raise, is just that - you don't have to be right all the time, just enough to make the play long-term profitable. Lower variance is not worth the lost profits that come with passivity in these type situations.
