I have OK-level experience (around 30k hands) in PLO High in the net, but zero experience playing it live. However I have some home game experience in NL texas and I have played one casino NL tourney also, so I´m comfortable playing live.
PLO has its own characteristics as we all know and I´m going to play it live in Riga (Latvia) in couple of weeks. So any tips you could give to live play in PLO? I´m wondering if it´s hard keep up how much the pot is at the moment and how much I can raise - especially in check-raise or re-raise situations. Other tips are welcomed too. Thanks. |

It's not very hard to keep track of the pot, the chips are in the middle of the table and you can always ask the dealer.
In check raise/re-raise situations you can always ask the dealer or there is usually some sharp player who can tell you. It's important to know how much you can bet rather than simply saying I raise pot without realizing how much it is. Calculating the pot is simple arithmetic. To bet pot, multiply the last bet by 3 and add previous calls and what's already in the pot from previous streets. Here's an example, 1/2 PLO. EP calls 2, MP raises pot to 9 (3 times EP's 2 is 6 + blinds of 2 + 1 = 9), LP calls 9, SB folds, BB calls 7, EP calls 7. Pot = 37 Dealing Flop BB checks, EP bets 20, MP raises pot to 97 (3 times EP's 20 is 60 + pot of 37 = 97) LP folds, BB folds, EP re-raises pot to 328 (3 times MP's raise of 97 is 291 + pot of 37 = 328) Note ignore EP's first bet when calculating his re-raise. MP folds. Sorry if the that made hard reading, in the live games I play they round bets up to make calculations easier, so instead of 9, MP would have been able to bet 10 preflop. |

I had the opporunity to play at the concord card room in vienna when I was traveling. Oh my god, is it a diffrent game live. I was playing a game with 2 euro blinds. At a ten person table I was hands where 5 of them would be all in for 300 euros each, and when the hand was over all 5 guys flipped up hands that most people would consider automatic folds. I almost moved to vienna because of it. Expect variance and expect fun.

Its the dealers job to keep track of the pot in a PL game. If you say bet pot or raise pot, the dealer will announce the bet. I'm almost always betting pot, so this generally works for me.
As another poster said, expect loose bad players, lots of variance and lots of fun. For example, Don't ever lay down middle set on a dry flop unless you have a definte read that the person raising you is a good player, in live PLO you will see people get all in on the flop with bottom set and all kinds of 2 pairs. |
