WSOP Main Event 2006=Snoover
There doesn't appear to be too many storylines here. Last year we had Greg Raymer's tremendous chance to go back to back, Phil Ivey with a huge chip stack trying to live up to his title of best player in the world,Steve Dannenman the self proclaimed guy next door who was the fourth or fifth best player in his home game, and of course Mike "The Mouth" and his battles against himself and The Shiek.
What do we have this year? Jamie Gold being a card rack? Allen Cunningham accumulating chips? Besides the nice 2+2 story of Rizen (Eric Lynch) amassing a great chip stack and playing well, and Prahlad Friedman having a good chance this Main Event doesn't seem to have the same appeal as last year, or the last three years. Even this Sabyl Cohen story isn't as interesting as Tiffany Williamson because it seems Cohen can actually play and isn't as lucky/controversial (controversial in the sense that Williamson is a human rain delay). |

You've got the circus of Humberto Brenes and Brian Micon to add.

You have to admit that this in no way compares to the storylines I mentioned from last year. This is just so stale without a big name pro or two doing anything. (and no I'm not counting Cunningham who has no personality at all). |

Re: WSOP Main Event 2006=Snoover
we have the "how many times can cunningham blinks before he looks at his hole cards?" storyline.
nobodys mentioned lisandro, who is pretty emotional and pretty damn good too. and rizen and prahlad will get some good run. |

Do you really think people gave a crap about Steve Dannenmann while they were reading Cardplayer updates a year ago? |

Slow year comparatively, but with Matusow, Ivey, Juanda and Raymer all in the running with less than 40 people left last year, it would be hard to top that. Plus Williamson was still alive, lol.

[/ QUOTE ] Micon was annoying enough when I was getting spam e-mails for his "WINNING MICON SYSTEM" (you know a poker player's a winner when he's got to hawk his strategy on garishly designed websites and through mass e-mails). Then I read about the antics at the WSOP. Jesus, the guy seems like a huge tool. |

Re: WSOP Main Event 2006=Snoover
With ~8500 'unknowns' in an 8700+ entrant field, the numbers were stacked much more against having a very interesting end run than ever before. Last year we got a little lucky to be teased with the prospect of an exciting finish from the start of the final 27, but this time the odds held up. ESPN was hoping for another year like 05 more than any of us - now it's up to them to create stories for the no-names with their coverage.

Raymer was known by many posters here, but was unknown to the rest of the poker world, let alone the man on the street. The rest of it was personalities on TV, none of which comes across in the online reports. Virtually all of the stories and personalities and "memories" of the past WSOPs are a result of ESPN editing. |
