Default Recommend me a 42\" Flatscreen for a very non technical Mommy....

So me mum is getting a flatscreen. They are looking at 42" and want me to advise them. From what I've read, Panasonics are the way to go. Any recs, any other brand worthy? I'm thinking Plasma cause I read they are still better. Must have HDMI, and have HDTV in it, not ready.

What about calibration? Is that something they can do with a test disc? or should they have the store do it in their home for a fee (they are going to have to have it installed anyway)

What is the best place to buy one?

thanks

As far as bang for buck I have read LCD is the way to go, if money is no object then go for plasma, do plasmas still have the burnin issue?

Go to Costco and get the Vizio 42"

It is supposed to be by far the best bang for your buck LCD/Plasma out there.

They currently have the 42" plasma for $1299 and the LCD goes on sale starting tomorrow for $1299. Go instore and get a coupon today.

You can more about the deal at Fatwallet discussion

and more about the tv and a comparison of an LCD vs. Plasma at

I think I'm going with the LCD tomorrow.

Thanks for the advice - just spoke with mom. Now they think they want 50" - lol

Just read about the Vizio in an AV mag. They love it. Will look into that one (50") and the Panny.

And yes - from what I understand - burn in is less of an issue.

There is a DVD you can play on your plasma tv to prevent/get rid of burn in I believe.. just run it in the first 100 hrs of use, it just goes through a bunch of colors.. I heard about it on another board, i'm sure anyone here with a plasma knows what i'm talking about.

The idiots who pre wired the big living room put the speaker wires for the front left and right channels in the ceiling??? WTF. I told the folks they'll probably have to have them rewired down to listening levels, or at least near the TV height. Centex morons.
