CAREFUL - Computer Hacker Convention is in Vegas this week

Careful logging into your Poker and Bank accounts while in Vegas this week. I was just eating dinner here and talking to a guy who is in town for the computer hacker convention. He claims he works for a company that prevents hacking, and that is why he is here. But it seems this group has to change hotels each year as they hack into everything while they are in town: the hotel wireless system, the logging system, the phone system, etc.… So watch what you log into wirelessly as I am sure a few people will get hacked this week.

And yes, they are somewhat notorious for taking advantage of unsecured transmissions. Don't be surprised to see your login and passwords displayed on a publicly visible readerboard if you're stupid enough to use unsecured wireless.

And a guy who works for me is heading out there as I type, and he is afraid to even bring his laptop, and he is a security expert, who testifies in trials and stuff.

he says its that bad ... don't even think about using wireless, and in general just use some public PC if you have to use one.

I don't think that the majority of hackers are out to cause harm. It's my understanding that most of them do it for the challenge. I could see them hacking into a few dozen bank accounts or something while they are there, but I doubt any of them would act on it. This obviously doesn't apply to all hackers. World famous hackers are some of the highest paid people in the IT security field. They simply use their skills to design new software to prevent hacking.

Don't fool yourselves. I've been to defcon. It's an orgy of system cracking. Why? It's fun.
