Default Verbal call versus putting in chips

Just curious if others have run into this and if I was out of line.

10-25 NL. I have JJ and am trying to decide if I should call a decent bet on the river with a board of 97742. I have about 5K in chips behind. I finally decide to call and announce "call". The dealer looks at me and says "call?" and I say "yes, call". The bettor then looks at me and says "you call?" and I say "yes, I have jacks - I call". The bettor then asks me to put the chips into the pot. I look at him and say again "I call". He insists that I move my chips into the pot. I grab a stack of chips and move them forward and am waiting to see his hand. My JJ hand is on the table for all to see. He finally shows his hand and reveals that he has a 7. I count out the called bet and pay him, but I am pretty upset with the perceived slow roll. I ask him if he thinks I might get up and run out of the casino without paying him the final bet and he replies that the rules state that he does not have to show his cards until the pot is right. Even if that is the rule, I have never encountered anyone that would not except a verbal call.

You are not a jerk, you said call, verbal statement is binding. It's easy enough to count out the bet after the hands are flipped.

See various threads where someone says "I think I have to call", etc. Perhaps there has been some problem in this club with situations like this.
Say "Call" and shove some chips forward.

Yep, move some chips. I would have asked and not shown down until you did too. There are just too many people that will pull some kind of angle with that action. If you move chips, then everyone is sure you are calling. If it was a low stakes game I might want to see the whole call out there, but in a 10/25 game, tossing a few greens or blacks out is enough.

In a 10/25 game I am less likely to be a big prick about it, but I still want to see you put some chips in. I have been in that situation too many times where someone verbally calls, everyone including the dealer hears it and acknowledges it, but then at showdown, the turd refuses to put their call in and claim they never called or some other BS to avoid paying the full call. It ends up in a big mess and generally distroys the table's mood. Where being a little bit of nit, might piss you off for an orbit or two, it wont distroy the whole table's mood.

I will add that the only place I have ever felt comfortable in doing the whole verbal thing is the Wynn, as their dealers and floor tend not put up with any angle shooting BS and will enforce a call.

This took place at the Wynn.

There would not be any way to dispute what I was doing (calling). There were 10 witnesses to me saying "call" or "I call" about 4 times to either the dealer or the player.

Put chips in. The player was being cautious in this time of too many angles shooters. An extreme angle shooters would come back saying "call? I didn't say call. I said blah blah blah.." and on goes his argument trying to muddy the understanding.

I am surprised the dealer didn't just move the showdown along then. They are VERY good about enforcing verbal action. I had a guy try to back out of his AI call in a 5/10 a while back, getted very pissed off insitiing he did not call despite the dealer and 4 other players hearing it repeatedly then he tried to rack and run. He was made to pay up and get out.

Don't sweat it too much at the Wynn, but anywhere else you want to see those chips move into the pot, or at least a significant part of them. Just reverse the rolls with someone you have never seen and are likely to never see a again. Do want them calling with putting the chips/bills in the pot?

Maybe he was a nervous nit who had been angle shot before. Just put your chips in.

(However, If this was all an elaborate ruse to set up a slowplay then you should probably stab him in the eyes with toothpicks)
