Do video games help with poker skills?

Just thinking about reaction times / puzzle solving faculties / etc.

Obviously not talking about Halo, etc- but more mentally challenging games.

Then yes.

Video games (much like poker) get a lot of bad press and a lot of the blame for deeper societal issues. But there are a lot of good things that stem from video game play (much like poker) and problem solving happens to be one of them...even with Halo.

I believe the whole gaming persona is very helpful for being a successful poker player. There are lots of pros these days with a background in gaming, these types of people are borderline obsessive and very competitive and will spend a lot of time perfecting and building a decent edge against their opposition.

And of course, they don't mind spending tons of time infront of a PC. [img]/images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img]

Thanks for the replies guys. I am 37 years old, take poker very seriously (even though I'm a relative noob) and also LOVE gaming (in moderation).

I sit firmly in the "use it or lose it" camp with regards the Mind. Hence I love any kind of mental challenge.

Definitely agree that video games have had a bad press. It seems kids these days just want the shoot-em-ups rather than anything you actualy have to think about.

most of the people I know who own video games were instantly good at poker. I don't think it's so much video games teaches you how to be good at poker, but the personality traits associated with being good at poker are the same as video games.
