Default Any tips on dealing with smoke?

I am fairly sure there is nothing I can do about this, but I figured I would ask anyway just in case there is some ancient secret that I don't know about.

I don't smoke anymore- I used to when I was in college, but I gave it up a while back.

Now, after spending 5 hours in a MTT, I end up with watery eyes and a closed up throat. Lame.

I came home tonight totally hoarse, and the wife said I smell like an ashtray.

Is this just the price I have to pay for live play? Weeks of my life raked off from second hand smoke?

Most poker rooms do not allow smoking in them anymore. That includes almost all rooms in CA, NV and Foxwooods to name a few.

Yeah, sorry- I should have mentioned that this particular room "does not allow" smoking at the tables, but people are free to move off to the side and smoke in a "special" area with a smoke-eater. This of course doesn't work.

And even though the poker room at Foxwood's is non-smoking, the smoke still moves around the casino.

(I haven't been there since the updated the room though, so maybe it's better?)

I heard one of the reasons Johhny Chan started carrying around an orange is that the smell helps with smoke. Don't know how well it works, but worth a try.

I've heard that too. Part of me doesn't want to look like a Chan fan-boy, but if it works....

Try drinking whisky. It disguises the smell of smoke

If it works with an orange, it probably works with other citrus fruit as well. You can always carry around a lime or something.

The new room at Foxwoods is in a completely smoke-free downstairs. So no smoke there, although all of the entrances to the room are through smoking sections, so you just have to deal with it for the walk into the room.

I carried an orange into a home tournament with 50+ players, half of whom were smoking. I pieced the orange with my finger nail, then held it close to my nose to smell its fragrance. I recommend it, as it provides temporary relief from the wretched smoke.

The back of the pokerroom stairs (not escalator) leads you right up to the Rainmaker hallway. I have never smelled smoke there.
