having trouble sleeping after going out drinking
Whenever I go out drinking, I often wake up 5-6 times in the night and have trouble getting back to sleep. I am pretty sure this is connected to drinking since I have never had insomnia or other sleep problems. It happens even if I have a mild night of 6 or 7 beers rather than a hard liquor blackout/time travel night. Does anyone else have this and what's a tip for fixing it?

Re: having trouble sleeping after going out drinking
Excessive drinking robs the brain of seratonin, an important sleep hormone. Try 3g melatonin to even it out.

I had the same problem, then I realized it was because I was drinking rum and cokes or rum and energy drinks all night and the caffeine was waking me up.

Re: having trouble sleeping after going out drinking
Yep, like many others I have this same problem. Either I can't fall asleep or I wake up real early, sort of depends which way it goes.

I always sleep like a baby after a long night of drinking beer.

Re: having trouble sleeping after going out drinking
I wake up a lot if I'm dehydrated. Have a few glasses of water while you are out drinking, one or two before going to bed, and keep a full glass on the nightstand for when you wake up in the middle of the night. Helps reduce hangovers too.

Re: having trouble sleeping after going out drinking
Let me alert you to the disturbing fact that this issue can get worse as you get older.
When I was in my early 20s, I had no problem sleeping after drinking (particularly if I took the obvious precaution of drinking some water). After becoming married with kids, I inevitably drank less, losing my tolerance perhaps. At one point, I went through a stage when I found it helpful to have one drink right before bed. I noticed that if I had 2 or more drinks, I would have the issues mentioned in the OP. Then I noticed that if I didn't time my one drink correctly, it could backfire. In other words, if I had the drink at 10 pm, I might get tired for a while. But if I stayed up till 11:30, this would boomerang and I would be more alert right when I wanted to sleep. I have nothing particularly helpful to say about this, except try not to get older. |
