$5 Tournament Summary

I think these tournament summaries are among the most useful things on this forum, and people don't post them nearly enough. With that said, here is a summary of of a 3rd place finish I got in a pokerstars $5 tourney recently. I've commented on many hands, asking quesions about them and giving my reasoning. I know it's long, but I really would like to hear what people think about many of these hands, because I think I am making lots of small mistakes in easy to play situations, and I'd like to stop doing that.

Also, don't just read the first hand and say "You suck I'm not going to read this." I know it's not pretty.

In situations like this, I like to limp and if nobody raises preflop at this level, I assume I have the best ace.
Since as you can see people go crazy with top pair, at the $5 level I play the hand like this a lot, but I'm open to other ideas.

Why do people keep semi-bluffing me? They just never learn. I bet 900 on the turn because 900 looks easier to call than 1000. Does anyone else do this?

Ok wait, I can explain. On a recent episode of "The Circuit," Gavin Smith had been saying how he hates having a big stack to his left that is always callin his raises in position.

I looked it over when you posted it. We play at about the same level so take whatever I say with however many grains of salt you want. If nothing else maybe it will get somebody more experienced to say that I'm FOS. Only going through part 1 now. I'll try to get to part 2 later.

Hand #6 - I'd probably call this down, but hate it. The initial bet when the scare card comes looks like a weak bluff at having the flush. The min-raise about the same. I suspect you ended up folding the best hand? Having the player still to act behind you is worrisome and it's easy to assume one of them must have made a flush. Based on your read I might have folded if floattheboat put in a real raise. I probably raise the flop too. Unless UTG limped with KQ or AQ which is possible you're probably ahead here.

hand # 7 - I'm assuming you're the big stack at the table by a large margin although it's hard to tell without the other stack sizes. I probably fold pre-flop anyway. The risk reward ratio of stealing the blinds at this point doesn't seem worth it and that's the only reason for this move I can see.

hand #9 - I like your concept. The only draws are straight draws and you deny them the odds to draw at an OESD so representing a continuation bet makes sense. You obviously induce a bet on the river as planned, but at that point one likely straight draw (KQ) came through. I'm not sure the raise on the river accomplishes anything except bloating the pot if he's actually been chasing the straight and now beats you or getting him to fold which serves no purpose. What do you do if he pushes over the top of your raise? I probably just call here.

Hand #11 - Raise preflop. As played bet more on the turn as you say.

Hand #15 - I agree. Steal liberally until they start playing back at you or you get caught. Then change gears and you'll get action on your good hands. At this point the blinds are worth stealing.

Hand 18 - Villian has a pretty healthy stack to be pushing over the top of a an open raise from the big stack. I suspect you're ahead of most of his range (maybe 55-QQ, AK, and AQs so ahead roughly 60/40). Even adding AA to KK still makes you a 55/45 favorite. I could go either way on this. I'm not sure I want to risk that much of my stack when I can pick up small pots with almost no risk. Calling this and winning will make smaller stacks even less willing to tangle with you. Calling and losing will turn the tide at your table since villian will now be big stack. Folding might give medium stacks the idea that they can run over you. Meh.

Hand 34 - If you're going to call the button raise here how can you not bet the flop.

Hand 37 - You're right. It's a fold.

Hand 39 - A continuation bet maybe gets him to fold. I like your line here.

Hand 41 - I'm in the constant raise school although I'll sometimes mix it up a bit early if my 3x raises are getting too many callers. Crank down to 2.5x later on as well.

Yeah you're right, I just get it in my head that when they insta-call on a flush draw board they have the flush draw. I went back to the hand history and the river was an ace, the mr. flushdraw bet 500 and the other guy folded. I guess we'll never know.

I didn't even think about that, but I think you're right. I may be able to get a call with some wacky hand if he's a donk, but there really isn't very much value in raising there. Also, if I just call and have to show down the hand, I may not get bet into when I show weakness in the future. I like it.

Yeah this spot sucked, I'd like to hear what people have to say about this hand in particular. He hadn't done anything wacky like this before so I really didn't know what to do, and when I don't know what to do I default to calling because it's easy and I usually have outs. I just got a vision of him sitting there with his pocket nines laughing maniacally, and I wasn't going to let him get away with it.

Part 2:

Hand 44 and 45 - Almost got yourself in trouble twice playing weak aces out of position. I just got crippled doing the same thing myself (hence time to look part 2 over). You got lucky both times. But you already knew that.

Hand 46 - I could argue folding, pushing, standard raise, or, if you've got reason to think you might get away with it, completing. Not sure which is best. Once he pushes then you're right, you've got to call. Given that calling your raise pot commits villian and pot odds then dictate a call by you might be an argument for folding since this isn't a hand you really want to go to war with for almost half your stack.

Hand 47 - You're on the other side of the last hand now with the added complication that the BB might wake up with a real hand. Assuming your read was that this was a blind steal then this might be your best chance to double up and get back on track. If he has a real hand or flops lucky then that's poker.

Hand 60 - Yes, you have to fold. You took your shot on the turn - he's got something - you don't.

Hand 71 - I might just call here sometimes, but think it's a leak. You aren't scared of anything but AA and KK which is a small part of his raising range. Your raise puts him on notice that if he continues it's for his stack. Taking the pot down there isn't a bad result either.

Hand 78 - You've been abusing the BB with trash, why just complete here? As played I probably do fold when he raises. I'd rather take the lead or not play it at all.

Hand 81 - In a blind on blind battle I'm raising any pair pre-flop. The results probably end up about the same, maybe worse.

Here are comments on the first half of your post. I’ll try to get to the second half tomorrow. I haven't read the other poster's comments yet (other than his first few sentences). Take my comments with a grain of salt too...I also play at about your level. I think #18 and #41 are probably the most important in terms of learning something new or doing something differently than you do now.

#4 – Calling a raiser and caller with A9 seems kind of loose here.
#5 – I probably fold 96o here.
#6 – I probably raise the flop to make people pay for their flush and straight draws here.
#8 – Calling his play here a semi-bluff is an insult to semi-bluffs. That’s just bad poker.
#9 – I like that play.
#14 – I think stealing occasionally at this point is fine. I would be selective though. Also, I’m not sure if it’s the same in $5 MTTs, but I’ve been playing mostly 2-5 table turbo sng’s (everything from $1-$25) and at least up to $10 or $15 buy ins I’m finding that I can get away with much small than ‘textbook’ steal raises. People will fold their blinds to them, and they’ll almost never reraise me unless they’ve got a real hand (which I don’t mind folding to). I’m tending to do this later though, because when blinds get to 75/150 I’m often at an awkward stack size (m=8-15).
#16 – I think I fold pre-flop here…his stack isn’t really big enough to give you the implied odds you need to make the call for set value worthwhile.
#18 – It looks bad to me (because he’s got a pretty big stack too), but its not clear without doing the math. I’ll look at a loose range (88+, AJ+) , and a tight range (TT+,AK) for him. For the loose range, Pokerstove has you at 49.1%...so your call would be fine. Against the tighter range, you’re getting crushed…34.1%...so you’d need almost 2:1 odds, which you aren’t close to getting here. I guess we should look at an in between range too (99+, AQ+)…you’re at 40.2%...so you basically need 3:2 odds….you’re not really close to that. Overall, I’d say it’s a fold, unless you’re pretty sure he’s making a loose push here.
#21 – It would be great if one of the poker software products (none of which I’m using yet) like Pokertracker would let you do data mining to answer questions like “Do people call more of my 900 chip raises than my 1000 chip raises?”.
#22 – I would think about folding after I’m raised pre-flop. He’s either way ahead of you or in a coin flip situation, but when overcards come on the flop, you’re not going to be very confident playing this hand aggressively. You’re certainly not getting the implied odds you need to play for set value, unless you’re almost 100% sure you can stack him with a set.
#23 – I fold pre-flop. The raiser may have nothing, but the caller is showing at least a little bit of strength.
#26 – Fold the flop here. I think the only hands you might be ahead of here are KQ, 88, and 77…and this would be a pretty lag way for any of those to be played.
#29 – I fold to the preflop raise. By the way, now that there are antes I’d be looking to steal blinds a LOT unless your table seems especially loose.
#30 – There we go. Keep in mind what I said earlier about steal sizing though. Standard here is probably 1100, but I would try 900 and see how it works.
#34 – I think you should bet the flop here. Also, I’m curious why you called the pre-flop raise. Was he stealing a lot?
#35 – Nothing good ever comes from watching poker on tv. You have permission to try this play again when you’re good enough that Gavin Smith is sitting to your right with a much smaller stack than you.
#36 – I almost always reraise pre-flop with QQ. In some situations I think that may be a leak of mine (maybe), but not here. He’s in a stealing situation, so he may have nothing. He also did a kind of large raise that looks like he doesn’t want a call…which makes AA and KK (and likely AK) less likely than normal. I think you should do a big, fat reraise.
#37 – Surely there must have been some stealing opportunities in those last 15 or so hands? And the answer to your question is ‘yes’ unless you have good reason to think he’s stealing.
#39 – I think that’s fine. There’s no risk of him catching up to you, you gave him a chance to make a hand, and he doesn’t have THAT many chips to get in the middle. If he had a bigger stack there might be more of an argument for betting on an earlier street.
#40 – I’d sort of like to see you post this one on 2+2. I usually fold here, because stacks are too small to give you great implied odds if you hit a big hand. Not sure which of us is playing this right.
#41 – Constant raise size is fine. Actually, probably better…at least as far as hiding what you’ve got. I may be forgetting, but I don’t think I’ve seen you attempt a steal with garbage yet. That’s something you may want to add to your game. If your table image isn’t shot (which it isn’t here) once the antes kick in its often worth stealing from CO, Button, or SB…it only needs to work ½ the time (roughly) to breakeven…and even with garbage you’ll sometimes hit the flop hard enough to win more chips.

Yeah I still think this play is good, because if he's going to be re-raising all in with top 30% of hands or so (which may even be too high a percent), this works 70% of the time and 30% of the time, I've got some outs. That's the way I see it at least, I could certainly be wrong. A push may be better though because with a push I at least don't give him any impression that I may fold.

Really? He's got an M of 20, is there a rule of thumb for this? Although I still would have called if he had less because I have a problem with not looking at stack sizes when I should, and I have a lot of trouble folding pairs preflop.

A reraise is my usual play, but I was starting to get shortstacked. I said to myself that I can either reraise preflop and win a small pot, or I can take the higher variance, but most likely higher profit route and just flat call. I realized that I may lose all my chips by letting him see a flop, but I was willing to take that chance in order to possibly double up.

you are too passive preflop, but you run so good it doesnt really matter. I might breakdown hands if I have time later, but those are the generalities that I see.
