The time has come for me to start thinking about getting out of the US because of all the latest [censored] in regard to internet gambling. With the arrests of casino affiliates in florida and cease and desist letters to a poker affiliate in Washington I'm a little scared to say the least. Currently I make 3/4 of my income as a non poker casino affiliate. The rest comes from playing poker.
I'm thinking the best country would be Canada to move to since it's close to the US and pretty similar culturally. I just have no idea about where to begin my emigration proccess. I don't know what the legal steps are. I would like to retain my US citizenship and just live in Canada. I am thinking Vancouver just because it's the warmest and close to Seattle. Can someone point me in the right direction on paperwork/other legal stuff I have to do to live in Vancouver without breaking the law? I know that KKF lives in Thailand and is still an American citizen, I would like to know how to do that in Canada. Thanks |

jokerthief,
do you have family in canada? if not, your best chance at legal status is applying to a canadian school (i would recommend UBC, but SFU is alright too and BCIT might have something you'd enjoy). once you are in as a student, it's easier to transistion to one of the other status categories. if you can afford to invest $500k, then disregard, canada would love to have you. |

Do I need to be a resident to get an apartment? Also, what kind of investments would I have to make if I go that route? Just Canadian stocks, Canadian bank accounts, real estate, that kind of thing? The problem about this is that I know jack about the Canadian stock market. Plus most of my assests are either non liquid or offshore. |

if you must move to Canada, I guess North Couve is a good locale, but wouldn't it be better to just work and live in the U.S.?

basically you need to either start a business CIC thinks will be beneficial to canada or you need a net worth of at least $800k and the willingness to hand over $400k of it as a five year, interest free loan to CIC. failing that, your last option is to buy a farm. |
