Something I find amusing about the big commotion over flag burning/desecration is the fact that most USA flags are made in China.
Isn't it a little hypocritical to be so "patriotic" but not have a problem that your "american" flag was made in another country? |

not everything has to be made in the USA. it's what the flag represents that makes it important to people.

having the flag made elsewhere is a sign of our good use of delegation and strength of capitalism.
and, as others have said above, it is purely symbolic in nature anyhow. America, America, Eff yeah!!!!!! |

I don't really get to deep into politics, it was just an observation.

This surely should be moved to the Politics forum (despite the fact that I quit reading it shortly after I started).
Jingoistic people who think it should be against US law to burn an American flag should perhaps check to make sure that their flags are made in the US. Although I could imagine an argument from a capitalist position that US flags made in China are simply an example of the system working. I suspect that this position would more likely be held by someone with libertarian leanings, however. This sort of person will probably be against laws banning flag-burning (free-speech issues trumping any personal contempt for the flag burner). Somewhat off the subject, I once purchased a flag with the intention of burning it (15 or so years ago). Not only could I not bring myself to burn it, I made sure to fold it properly and ended up giving it to someone I knew would display it. Somehow, the fact that I could legally have burned that flag increased my pride in my country enough that I didn't want to burn it. Some sort of liberal over-thinking, surely. I suspect that making flag-burning illegal would actually result in more flags being burned. |
