The WSOP will be much, much smaller next year.
The House voted to ban internet gambling, including online poker, yesterday by a vote of 317-93. If this bill becomes law, it will prohibit banks from transferring customers' funds to online poker sites and companies like Neteller and will force banks to work with law-enforcement agencies to stop money from being transferred to online poker sites and companies like Neteller.
The Senate will vote on this bill next. If the Senate passes it, the bill will become law because President Bush supports it and will sign it. This will effectively prohibit Americans from playing at online poker sites, which will obviously result in a much, much smaller number of entrants at the WSOP next year because there will be no American online qualifiers. Cardplayer.com and several other sites have been warning about this for months and encouraging poker players to contact their Representatives and Senators and voice your opposition to this bill. It's too late to contact your Representative now, since the House has already passed the bill. However, you better contact your Senators soon to voice your opposition to this bill or it's going to become law. It's already halfway there. If you don't do something, one day you're going to wake up and find that you can't play poker online anymore. You better do something before it's too late. Holy 2 months ago batman! Everyone knew this was going to pass the House. The key now is to not get it heard by a Republican senate before November. This is all by a lock anyway though as they are booked for the year I think. Vote Democrat in November for the open Senate seats and we stand a good chance of defeating this thing. Although I think it would even be a close call today in the Senate.

While a valid concern, how does this affect the WSOP? This would only effect EFT's and CC transactions directly with Gaming Sites. It would not effect fund transfers to escrow accounts such as Firepay and others. While the bill has teeth, do you believe that this 12 Billion dollar industry will pack up and go home because they can't directly take a CC anymore? The industry will always find a way to survive.
I see this having little if any effect on online poker or the WSOP.

Also, current Senate Minority Leader Reid (D, NV) is a friend of gaming interests, and likely opponent of HR 4411. If he were Majority Leader, this bill and those like it would almost certainly never see the floor in the Senate (unless of course the big B&M industries get behind an internet gambling ban, which would be disasterous regardless of which party was in charge).

No doubt, you need to contact your representatives, and you need to get active and vote in November, but this thing does not stand much of a chance in the Senate.
