I have crohns disease. For the most part it doesn't bother me but every once in a while I get really sick. I just spent a month in hospital where I had surgery. Recovery will be another month. Something like this will probably happen every 5-8 years. I also need medicine on a regular basis. In Canada OHIP takes care of everything.
I am considering going to medical school in the staets. Assuming I am able to become a doctor, is living in the states with my illness at all feasible? What about going to medical school for four years there? |

yes, why would you think not? I know nothing about this topic except the idea that the vast majority of medical students in the US live without health insurance seems unfeasible. I'm sure it's worked into whatever grant/scolarship/student loans deal they have going on.

I could be off here, but I think that unless your illness is communicable then you will be able to come to the states.

I wasn't a medical student, but at my grad school you could get health insurance through the university, no questions asked. Actually you were automatically enrolled unless you opted out. I don't know how the coverage and treatment would be versus Canada's OHIP. Can you go back to Canada if you need surgery or some other intensive treatment?

I know the grad student at Yale can easily get health insurance through the university. The non-porfessional schools actually have all their insurance provided and then professional schools have to pay. I am not sure if you may get a special deal as a med student.

At many professional schools insurance is mandatory. If it is not covered by whatever awards or grants you may receive, purchasing into the appropriate plan will probably cost you between 1 and 2.5k. Pre-existing conditions won't matter. Thus far my graduate health plan has paid out a little over forty-thousand dollars in treating my chronic condition, and there is nothing they can do about it--same flat minuscule copay for me.

thanks for the responses so far. The main part of the question I want answered is about work. Will my chronic illness make getting insurance really difficult, or if I were to get a job at a hospital/company, would the insurance be taken care of? Would I have to pay some crazy fees because of my illness?
What about the fact that every few years I may need like a 1-2 months of work. |
