Place to live in Detroit - Any advice at all?
Got an email on Friday telling me I'm moving to Detroit. yay.
Is there a good place for a 24 year old to live in Detroit, and have some fun? I'll be working 16 miles West on I-96 FWIW, but I'll live anywhere. Wikipedia made Detroit seem pretty dangerous, so I figure I'll ask you guys if you know of any neighborhoods where I can get drunk with other young people, and stumble home without being robbed. (Lincoln Park in Chicago would be a good benchmark.) Interesting fact from Wikipedia: "The National Institute for Literacy declared in 1998 that 47% of Detroiters were "functionally illiterate." Some 72% of all Detroit children are born to single mothers." |

Perhaps I am misformed, but Detroit is made out to be one of the worst places to live in USA. You rarely here anything cool said about it(besides rappers) like you do about NYC or LA. Whenever anybody mentions "Detroit" it seems like the word crime follows quickly afterwards.

You're not gonna want a "Detroit" address. Suburbs are mandatory.

Sure we all know about Detroit Cities reputation, but it is actually improving. But did you know that Oakland County, which is an adjacent county to Wayne County (Detroit) is the 4th wealthiest in the United States. Oakland County has many cities which are great to live in. Nice shopping, night life etc... Look into Royal Oak and Ferndale.

Wyandotte is 15 mins from the city, affordable, and no murders. Woodhaven, Trenton, Riverview, allen park are all nice quiet places to live within 20 miles of the city. I'd avoid Taylor, Romulus, Wayne, and especially Inkster. |

Royal Oak, Birmingham, Rochester and Grosse Pointe are all very cool cities. If you dont mind the drive, Ann Arbor would be a great place to live too.

Re: Place to live in Detroit - Any advice at all?
There are actually some nice budding gentrified spots in Detroit proper on the edges of Mexicantown and Greektown. If you like cloistered progressives/drunk frat boys, 16 miles West out on I-86 of Detroit would be about 20 miles East of Ann Arbor.
