Default Sometimes the whole game is a bad beat

A couple of weeks ago my gf said that there was a single's "beach party" thing at a local hotel and that there would be some poker there. I assumed that it would be a tourny with some absurd juice (the last one I went to ended up being a 40+60 with 4% of the field being paid, eek!) Anyways, last night she reminded me that it was happening so I called over to the hotel to see what was up.

Me: Is there a casino night event going on tonight?
Hotel: No, it's "Paradise Night" a fund raiser for the fire and police departments. We have a DJ and the pool is open. Oh, wait, there are couple of poker tables set up for no-limit texas hold em.
Me: Is it a tournament or...?
Hotel: No, no tournament. You can come and go from the game as you please.
Me: Alright.

Police are running it? Alright. So I bolt over, pay my $5 cover and wander around a bit to find the poker tables. I finally find them tucked away in back room and it's two round Wal-mart WPT tables with a dealer at each and at least 3 or 4 very drunk local business owers at each table. I witness the end of one hand where one very drunk guy peeks at his cards, then pushs a stack of blue, two stacks of red and a bunch of white chips, about $400-500 from my estimation, into a pretty small pot. The other player in the hand, wearing sunglasses, thinks for about five second and calls. The raiser flips over his hand, "I've got... uh, a jack... and a seven... oh! a pair of sevens!" The caller looks dejected, studies his hand, studies the board, studies his hand, sits up right, "Oh! I've got a pair of nines!" The dealer pushes the pot to the pair of nines.

I've had dreams about this game.

The raiser sighs and pushes away from the table and while whiping away the drool from my mouth I almost knock two people over to take his seat. I start counting out money for the dealer to buy in while looking at other people's stacks to see what I'm up against. I glance up at the dealer and her eyes are very wide. "No money here sir." "Huh? (four-hundred, four-fifty, five-hundered)" "There's no money needed here sir, here." And she gives me a copy of the "rules". Apparently the game is free to sit in, you get 50 "points" worth of chips and once you get 100 "points" worth of chips you can trade them in for a raffle ticket.

Fantaastic.

I gather up my money and head out to see what exactly the raffle prizes are. I see an inflatable palm tree, a cooler, and a portable b&w tv. I just continue past and head out the door.

Sometimes the whole game is a bad beat.

Why would you think there would be illegal gambling at a police event? Did you ask for any weed too?

btw the prizes pwned, that inflatable palm tree would be worth more than all the money you could've won.

Gambling is somewhat allowed here if it's for "charity" or a "fund raiser". And if the police are running it, it's not going to be busted. That's was my thought process anyways.

And the plam tree was kind of sweet thought. I probably would've wound up with the b&w tv.
