Why are Asians generally action players?
I was just wondering why it seems on average that asians are generally more action oriented players? I have no idea, i'm not asian, but it seems that asians generally liven up the table every time I play live. Any theories, or Asians that would like to contribute their opinion?

Re: Why are Asians generally action players?
i completely agree with this statement.... obviously there are some great asian sharks... but ya i have no idea why if we're being stereotypical here u'd think they'd be really passive (sorry if my ignorance/honesty offended anyone)

Re: Why are Asians generally action players?
I think perhaps it's cultural.
In most asian clutures gambling isn't looked down on like it is here in the west. Gambling is an accepted practice, and people who are successful at gambling are looked on favorably. Because good luck is culturally valued, perhaps many asian gamblers tend to be on the LAG side? I don't know if that's true, but it would make sense. |

Re: Why are Asians generally action players?
I've lived in Asia for 4 or 5 years and have noticed this when I've played live or in casinos.
I think Asians are reserved people except when it involves emotions - then things really hit the fan. As poker and gambling in general can really tear at your emotions, the atmosphere can sweep you along. I've noticed especially the Japanese and Koreans throwing money around the table and generally having a great time. Going to a casino is very popular here for the men during vacations (read leisure poker), and casinos are often centred around some kind of resort. I used to play a live game every week at a bar near my house. There were a few foreigners, but mostly locals. The table was definately LAGgy and I just found it too tricky to play against 5 LAGs. The foreigners were being bullied out of most of the pots by the locals continually flicking big chips into the centre of the table. I would especially like to hear the opinions of some Korean 2+2ers. |

Re: Why are Asians generally action players?
generally the asian culture looks upon gambling as a test of their destiny. they look at gambling as a way to see what their luck holds. it's pretty much all cultural, you can look it up.. one of the many things i learned in college, yet i dont use it b/c i play poker.. stay in school kids :-)

Re: Why are Asians generally action players?
Perhaps Asians, given their superior mathematical brains, figured out that poker is 100% luck.
No, but seriously, I think the reasoning may lie in the philosophy presented in many Asian cultures. Though we may see some of their ideals as strict and almost inhuman, they also have very relaxed, peaceful teachings that we as Americans don't normally study (Dalai Lama, proverbs, etc.) |
