WSOP Drug Testing
Major tournament circuits are trying to "clean-up" poker's image. They have enforced penalties for foul/abusive language, prohibited deal-making and anything else that would make poker as reputable as possible. With all of these new rules and regulations would it be that unreasonable to drug test final table players?
I mean, how can you justify enforcing a foul language penalty if other players at the table are high on cocaine or methamphetamine? I'm not saying that I'm in favor of drug testing the FT, but it isn't as outragous as many may believe. Obviously the drug test would only need to indicate if the player were high at that moment. I have identified several "name pros" and other recognizable players as being under the influence of drugs during televised events. And am wondering if the efforts to clean up poker are all for not if players are allowed to be high during tournaments. What do you guys think? Is this a bad idea, a good one or a really bad idea? Any suggestions on the best way to enforce this rule or any stipulations that should be included(eg exclude marijuana as a banned substance). |

What do you guys think? Is this a bad idea, a good one or a really bad idea? [/ QUOTE ] They don't drug test the floorpersons or dealers hired on a temp basis. It's the players' money involved. The "House" or ESPN has nothing to do with that. Besides, the players would object, either on drugs or not. So far, barring Tony G., I've seen no reason for a drug test. Heh. RazzO |

Re: WSOP Drug Testing
I believe if the drugs are play inhibitors they should not only be allowed but highly encouraged.
Only if they're taking some kind of drug that has insane concentration for a ridiculous long period of time would I even consider drug testing. It's really rather silly. If the cleaning up poker's image helped the players more than it does then maybe it could even be in an initial phase. But until advertisers are actually putting up $ for tournaments (The TOC isn't a tournament in my view) I don't think they have a say in anything. The biggest reason is that there's no sanctioning body. What are they going to do if you test positive--ummm throw you out of that tournament at best? Please. |

I got a better idea. Let people do what they want with their own bodies.

Was it the same one that my mother used to use when watching Top of the Pops during the late sixties and early seventies? "See him there? He's on drugs, him." "Yeah, right. How do you know?" "He's wearing a pink shirt. Only someone who's been injecting glue or sniffing marihuana would wear a pink shirt on TV." |
