Re: Bush urged to intervene after Castro\'s death
[ QUOTE ]
The report focuses on the possibility that the death of Mr Castro will nonetheless mark the beginning of a process of transition towards democracy, however gradual. It argues that the US should be ready to give a transitional government any assistance it requests, for instance in maintaining health care or power supplies, or training judges and police. [/ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] "The US government will need to be prepared well in advance to help in the event assistance is requested by the Cuban transition government," it says, noting that the US should "provide technical assistance in the first two weeks after a determination that a Cuban transition is under way". [/ QUOTE ] Boy, we Americans sure are bastards. Did you actually read the article before throwing up a link? Do you argue that if a Cuban transitional government requests our help and humanitarian aid from us such as medical supplies, we should turn them down, because that will make the rest of the World hate us? |

[/ QUOTE ] Whatever, respond to actual point, the article you linked states completely the opposite of what you implied in your OP. Why would the US government make the rest of the world hate us by responding to requests by the new cuban government for aid? Are you arguing the US government should ignore these requests? Why do you hate cubans? |

[/ QUOTE ] How about you actually link to an article that says the report says any differently? Because your OP is misleading in that it states one thing, and links to an article that says the opposite. Otherwise, you're right, we do have nothing more to discuss. The theory of Cuba has been the same for a long time, once Castro dies, kill them with kindness and they'll eventually move towards democracy. I see nothing that you've posted in that report that would lead me to believe that theory has changed. |

I assume "assistance" mean arms, and "transition government" means whatever pro business horse the USG is backing.
The probability of catastrophe for cubans if the USG tries to install a right wing puppet is very high. If they don't want a dictator they should remove him themselves. |

oh yeah, "assistance", HA!
Since the days of Tommy Jefferson, US planners have viewed Cuba as a US posession, it just hasnt happened yet. |

Re: Bush urged to intervene after Castro\'s death
I believe that the primary assumptions of what happens after Castro have always been flawed, at least for the short term afterwards. Castro's brother and the rest of the military and internal security aparatus have a strong vested interest in maintaining a totalitarian government, inlcuding the younger generation of such military and police that has slowly taken over from the revolutionary generation at the lower and mid-levels. Many of them would stand to be the targets of reprisals by the population if the government were changed, so they aren't going to go quietly right away after Castro is gone.
So my prediction is that after Castro is buried that their government will have the same repressive mechanisms in place and not be asking us for assistance that isn't one-way and non dependant on internal change. |
