Default Magnum of Beer (Housewarming gift)

This is a three liter of Ommegang Brewery's Three Philosophers. I got it as a housewarming gift for the friend in the picture.

It is a smooth quadrupel that is blended with a slight amount of cherry lambic. I had never had this brew before, and have never seen a beer in a 3l magnum. They chose the right lambic to mix ( kriek), as well, because any of Lindeman's other lambic flavors would have definitely been too pronounced. The grape and apple are too tart, and the peach and raspberry are way too sweet. The cherry strikes a nice balance. If you like quadrupels or dubbels and have never checked it out, it's a decent introduction, although maybe not the best introduction for those who prefer hoppier or lighter ales. It is malt and brewing yeast/sugar heavy.

When I tried this brew from a smaller bottle, I also noticed tIt pours much with a lot more reconditioning yeast out of this bottle than the 12-oz. The taste wasn't as overwhelming, but it definitely wasn't as good. Perhaps some of the novelty and social aspects of the large bottle contributed to the fact that I enjoyed it more, but I can't be sure.

Anyone know of any other brews, aside from this and Duvel, that have been released in a magnum?

Have you noticed any difference in between the distinct bottlings?

This brewery puts out some great Belgian-style beers. I have a 750 mL bottle of their abbey ale in my fridge right now awaiting a special occasion. Their Rare Vos is a lighter ale that's also very good.

As to your question, the Stone brewery puts out a magnum sized version of their Arrogant Bastard ale that, IIRC, has been aged in oak. That's the only other time I've seen a bottle that large. Unfortunately, I didn't buy it. I was but a poor college student at the time.

Update: I decided to drink the 750. It was very good. It was the culmination after a few other beers. ZOMG, I'm drunk.
